When she arrives to rehearsal, there's a distinct gloom and funk in the air.  She can't tell what it means, but people are dabbing at their eyes, wiping tears away.

"What's going on?" she asks Gretchen, who's playing Madeleine.

"There's... Reggie had a heart attack."

Reggie is their music director, a jovial, funny fifty-something man who hasn't yet gone gray.  He always seemed the picture of health to Bekki, but then, she's never been the best at diagnosing people's medical conditions just by sight.  She doesn't have the training.

"Shit," Bekki mutters.  "Is he -- is he --"

She can't choke out the word.

“They don’t know if he’s gonna make it,” Gretchen murmurs, her normally throaty voice gone soprano with emotion.

“When did this happen?”

“Last night, some time,” says Taylor, who plays Rose and understudies Queenie.  “Frank was supposed to meet him at his apartment to do some work and found him just…”

Frank, their assistant director.

“That’s… oh my god,” Bekki says.  She grabs for Taylor’s hand, and the two girls lean into each other, holding back tears.
