It’s not unheard-of to see someone sobbing in Starbucks, for one reason or another, but most of the employees just leave it be. Nobody wants to be interrupted in a private moment, do they? Maybe they’d just had a bad break-up, or maybe they’d heard bad news, or maybe they were just having a bad day, but no matter what the case, it’s more or less policy to ignore it.
Bekki has problems with this policy; she can’t stand to see people, even strangers, crying. Seeing some girl who could be one of her friends, could’ve been someone she went to school with, chatted with during an audition, with her head bowed over her coffee crying into it sends her into the back room, furiously wiping her own eyes and running to touch up her mascara. It’s actually even worse for her those rare moments she sees a guy crying; something about that sight always just wrenches her heart.
But she’s a good employee, she follows employee code. She knows nobody would appreciate some random redheaded barista skipping up to their table, seeming all phony with her “ohmygodareyouokay?” chatter. It’s Starbucks, it’s not meant to be personal. Maybe in some little café somewhere else, where all the customers knew the staff and vice-versa; where that wouldn’t be unusual or awkward. Here, it would just seem off, out of place, wrong. So, she leaves it alone.
