I know you don't have control over your schedule because people ask you to do things at the end of your day, but this is what I always do in my labs:
On Friday at the end of the day or Monday right when I get there (usually Friday) I jot down a few goals for the next week. It's ok if they dont get done, it's science and things come up. But just a general idea of what is going on. I also write a more detailed schedule of what I will be doing the next full day of work. This I do every day at the end of the day. So if it's Tuesday, you've already been through two days of the week, and you plan out a detailed schedule for Wednesday. That way you can work efficiently instead of running around all day. Doing this will keep you on task, you won’t forget random stuff you gotta get done, and you can set it up in a way that allows you can get the most done in your time frame. It always works well for me.
I know that is kind of what Francesca said to you, so it reminded me to tell you. maybe that will help? I hope people will respect your schedule because you are one of the newer people there, so I know they throw a lot of crap at you. I'm not sure where all of those people stand in terms of schooling (like if some are BS, PhD, or in grad school), but don't let those grad schoolers push you around. I am in grad school, and yes...it's freaking busy. But we go into it knowing that and they shouldn't start trends of pushing people around that aren't in school with them. They're not better than you. idk if that's even the case. But if they are, tell them LESLEY FOSTER'S FISTS want to have a talk with them...yeah...
that was really cool that you got sushi and flowers for your mom :) mmmm. Just think, today is Thursday and that means TOMORROW IS FRIDAY!!! then the weekend. you can do it!!! I love you!
oh and another way to maybe not get pushed around is when you start doing that, have your schedule out as a checklist so you can feel accomplished as you cross things off. :) if anyone emails you and gives you more things to do, email them back and be like “I have my day scheduled until the end, I can start working on these things tomorrow”. And if they are like “they need to be done today!” then you can say, “well I have to leave at or near to 5” (or whenever your day is supposed to end) “and I have my schedule written up each day before so if you’d like I can show you what I’m doing/what I’ve done, but I need to know these things beforehand because I’m booked” or something like that. Just a few suggestions! It’s a way to stand up for yourself without feeling out of place or rude.
well when i first started out i always wrote on the whiteboard what i had to do for the day, but then nowadays it becomes so routine that i don't write it cuz i usually know what i'm suppose to do. but then all of a sudden he emails me and is like "this week you need to do this because it's day 7 for this particular cage of transplants" and it has to be done within this week so i'm in a rush trying to finish my other stuff while getting this done for him. meanwhile, he emails francesca but doesn't provide details so when i give her stuff she's just as confused. today i was a little more prepared cuz i knew she had no idea what i was giving to her.
i don't always jot down what i have to do for the next week, but i usually have an idea. if anything i occassionally use google calendar to remind myself. although the easiest thing for me to do is write an email to myself, which is what i usually do to remind myself of things. lately i've been so caught up in trying to do work for others that i've forgotten basic things like ordering stuff i need, which i'm a little screwed for but not nervous about it.
as for francesca's suggestion, i thought it was a good idea. considering andrea just emails us to do stuff without even thinking about how much we had to do ourselves. we're meeting on friday to discuss plans so it should be good.
and yes tomorrow is friday. it's also will's 21st. i hope i get out of work early, or at least arrive in amherst before 8pm. hopefully.
