Sungmin is elusive, Zhou Mi thinks. Not outwardly so, but quietly, he blends.

Leeteuk-hyung once said that Sungmin is the middle child, and he sees how that role has affected him for all these years.

He's been with Super Junior long enough to have seen the transition from cute pink bunny ayego prince to quiet, withdrawn, self-conscious man, to sultry sex god. And now, Sungmin is somewhere in the middle again.

Zhou Mi has never had a chance to really talk to Sungmin alone before. They're always so busy, and when they're all in one place, it’s usually chaos and it's impossible to carry on a conversation of any depth and meaning. But Zhou Mi wants to, and so he sits and watches, waits until there is a time when he can really talk to Sungmin.

He doesn't know why he wants to get him alone to talk to him. He just does. If you asked him, he'd shrug and say he wants to get to know Sungmin better. That's true, and yet there is a part of him that wants more than that. But it's a part buried too deep to give words to yet.

The time finally comes when they're in Taiwan, and Zhou Mi doesn't overplan. He simply reserves a table at the restaurant and asks Sungmin to go to dinner with him. Alone.

Sungmin's eyes widen in surprise when Zhou Mi asks him, and at first he looks around to see if maybe Zhou Mi is talking to some other Sungmin and not him. Zhou Mi only smiles and waits. Sungmin says yes, because it would be rude to say no, and the idea of having an expensive dinner at the top of a skyscraper is too good to pass up.

So they go, and Sungmin is quiet and smiles a lot, and Zhou Mi wonders what he's thinking as they ride to the top in the elevator. When the maitre d' shows them to their table, Sungmin's eyes reveal all the surprise and wonder at seeing the city so beautifully laid out below him.

Zhou Mi feels a tightening in his chest, and he loves the child-like joy on Sungmin's face. He wants more than anything to give Sungmin everything in the world, just to see that look again.

They sit quietly looking over the menu, and he can see Sungmin's quiet but obvious alarm at the prices.

"Order anything you'd like. Don't worry about the money." Zhou Mi says, his tone carefully casual. Sungmin gives him a skeptical look, but Zhou Mi only smiles back in reassurance, then returns to perusing his own menu.

The waiter comes and they order, and Sungmin sits back, his eyes looking out over the city. Zhou Mi wonders why he's avoiding looking directly at him.

"What are you thinking?" Zhou Mi asks, watching him.

"I can't believe I'm here, actually." Sungmin laughs a little. "I was really surprised when you asked me."

"Oh?" Zhou Mi smiles warmly. "Why?"

"Because....you....well... you spend more time with Kyuhyun usually." Sungmin says with a small smile.

"Yes, and Kui Xian doesn't know how to appreciate fine, beautiful things like this restaurant." Zhou Mi laughs. "Besides, he's happier playing a video game at the hotel room than being here."

Sungmin smiles, and even though his mouth forms the smile, it does not quite reach his eyes. Zhou Mi realizes Sungmin thinks he was Zhou Mi’s second choice after Kyuhyun, and he picks up his wine glass, switching tactics. He holds it out for a toast. Sungmin picks up his wineglass too, and the delicate clinking sound is like music.

"Besides, I wanted to come here with you."

"Oh." Sungmin says, and a tiny blush crawls up his face. Zhou Mi feels that same tightening in his chest and knows he has to be careful. He could so easily fall in love with this man, and be crushed just as easily if Sungmin didn't feel the same.

"Tell me everything." Zhou Mi says with a twinkling grin. "Start from your childhood. I want to hear it all. Go." he says, leaning back in his chair. Sungmin gapes at him for a moment, and then he laughs. The sound of it is like music and it makes goosebumps flutter along Zhou Mi’s skin.

Sungmin obeys the request, and over the next fifteen minutes, he quietly and without ego tells Zhou Mi about his life. He tells him about his childhood in Wonju, and how he came to Seoul for SM tryouts. The wine helps relax him, and Sungmin just talks while Zhou Mi listens. He learns things he never knew, and hears more about things he already did know. He hears about all the skills Sungmin has excelled at, and those he is still learning.

He's a complex and fascinating web of intricacy and simplicity all in one. He finishes when the food arrives, and retreats back a little into his quiet shell. They eat for a few minutes in silence, savoring the taste of the food and merely enjoying the atmosphere.

When the food is a little more than half gone, Sungmin asks Zhou Mi to tell him about his life, and Zhou Mi complies. He tells Sungmin things he hasn't told anyone before, because Sungmin is a good listener, and he trusts him. It’s easy to tell Sungmin things, and the wine helps loosen his tongue as well.

By the time the food is gone, they know more about each other than ever before, and Sungmin is looking at him shyly. The question comes out of Zhou Mi's mouth before he can stop it.

"What would you do if you had never come to Seoul and been chosen for SM?"

Sungmin merely looks at him for a moment, turning the question over in his mind.

"I think I would have gotten a job, gotten married, had children." He says quietly. "Isn't that what normal people do?"

"Do you regret not having that life?" Zhou Mi asks gently. Sungmin sighs softly, and for a moment, Zhou Mi can see the future that never was flicker and vanish in Sungmin's eyes.

"A little. Sometimes. But I'm happy now."

"You can still get married and have children. After your military service is over?" Zhou Mi suggests, but something immeasurably sad passes over Sungmin's face for a moment, and then he looks out the window again, over the lights and the glittering buildings.

"No, I'll never get married."

Zhou Mi wants to ask a thousand things, all clamoring to be spoken on the tip of his tongue. But that would be going too far, prying to deep into the parts of himself that Sungmin hides away.

"Me either." Zhou Mi says thoughtfully.

"Why?" Sungmin turns to look at him in surprise. Zhou Mi only smiles knowingly at him.

"For the same reasons you won't."

Understanding flickers in Sungmin's eyes and he exhales slowly. "Is that why you asked me to dinner tonight?" he asks under his breath, but the question is an honest one.

"Perhaps." Zhou Mi smiles again, his fingers brushing over Sungmin's as he lifts his wine glass to his lips.

Sungmin smiles a little, and it’s warm and inviting. "Then perhaps I will say yes again." he says, and there is a tiny hint of promise hidden in his voice.

"Good." Zhou Mi says with a smile as the lights from the city of Taiwan twinkle far below them like tiny stars.
