The Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device had been on Caroline's mind all day. Not so much the girl who had 'told' her about it, though. She had wanted a better first impression with her, but what was done couldn't be fixed. Images of what the device might look like and thoughts about its inner workings had plauged her. Too bad the test subject had no idea how it worked. She could spend decades trying to figure out and create the device, or...she could ask the thing most likely to know.
The things she had heard about GLaDOS from others, how they spoke about her with a mix of fear and hesitation, and from her own unpleasant encounters made Caroline a little apprehensive about the idea of even asking. The things GLaDOS had suggested in their very first meeting scared Caroline to a degree. Ugh, but the device! The Quantum Tunneling Device was one of Aperture's greatest triumphs yet, and should she return with knowledge of the upgraded model, who knows what they may achieve. The gun its self could be key to going home in the first place. Besides. The science involved in packing something the great into such a small device was the sort of thing that made Caroline's heart flutter.
She had to know. But it wouldn't be free. Who knew what that monster would ask for in exchange for information or even blueprints? But it was worth at least asking, right? Even if every encounter with GLaDOS left Caroline frustrated, enraged or frightened. Even if she disagreed about everything that thing was. She simply couldn't give up the thought. If Caroline held off any longer on asking, it was clear thoughts of the portal device would only continue to control her thoughts.
For the sake of her current studies and perhaps her sanity, Caroline finally worked up the nerve to give her, it, a call.
