About ten years ago, I used to subscribe to several magazines. I used to love coming home and finding one in the mail. I'd settle in, put my few busy-nesses behind me, make coffee or tea, settle into a chair under lamp or window, and dive into what the editors threw at me for an hour or so.
I miss it. And am considering subscribing again. Here are some I'd like to re-visit:
Photos and essays, this Research Triangle, NC magazine offers critical and unique understandings of contemporary rural living, bridging gaps between urban and rural cultures.
A form I can stomach getting political information and critique in, even though I often end up so angry it's hard to do anything but stew.
I used to spend hours in my great-uncle's attic, reading through his back issues of NG. Amazing photos, of course, and a sense of finding where place, people, things, and animals come together to gesture towards culture.
Amazing articles: Thoughtful, reasoned, insightful. Oh: And that stats page at the beginning is always jaw-dropping.
These are mostly pretty tried and true. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd be more than happy to look into other ways of throwing my wee dollars towards a serial. I'd particularly be interested in finding a good (experimental-friendly) poetry journal that also focuses on visual arts.
