Things to keep behind your front lip -- like snuff -- or under the band of your sock -- like little money, things to ward off the pollution of the world in grid, things I want to hang tight around me these days:
-- girl punk, to sharpen your witted edge, to grip the wheel or fork harder
-- change for a dive juke box and too much beer in the afternoon, for the stupid-grin amnesia, the indulgent slide
-- a beat-up paperback (poetry, essays, philosophy), shoved in your backpack for wherever you end up staying the night, for morning or late-night
-- a sharpened key
-- memory of some time spent near water
-- a whetted tongue, for fucking or setting straight
-- at least one completely arbitrary thing, to displace your over-knowing, to crack a smile, to destroy the narrative
-- a deep breath and an eye closed over-long, for calm refusals
-- plastic sunglasses and a pair of shorts
-- the tiniest thing given you by someone you currently dig or once dug, to foreground the big matter in the little giggle
-- a voice scarred by years of smoking, to show you know and to show you deserve ... whatever
-- a fistful of about 6 fuck-you's
-- old food, or anything else to turn your stomach for just a couple of seconds
-- a Buddha's laugh
-- something dropped from a tree
-- a bitter recollection
-- "something stolen from a trick"
-- a piece of paper with any list on it
-- clenched teeth
simple joys,
prose lyric,
