Night before last: Lay in bed, shaking my foot, staring at the ceiling. Hum of air conditioner, no sleep. Cigarette after cigarette. Problems and frustrations zipped through my mind -- nto really pressing ones, just removed worries. At nearly 7, I fell asleep. Alarm went off soon after ( Read more... )

You don't bore me, bub! I like the mix of interests you have: Black Flag and gardening, debauchery and child-rearing, box turtles and Nabokov, for example. I think, like anybody, one of my personal goals has been to reconcile apparently contradictory influences/tastes in my life, and a lot of my contradictions come from feeling like a radical and an artist who grew up in a traditional, rural, Southern, poor environment. So: I'm a queer who likes to walk pastures, a quasi-buddhist who was baptized at age 10 in a river, a poet with a thick drawl, an apartment-dweller who would like to learn to grow things again. I want to hear punk that includes a slide guitar.

You seem to mix a lot of downhome, rural elements with the dark and urban, too. That's an impulse I identify with, obviously. Is that a safe assumption?

Oh! And you need to make some music suggestions for me, if you will. I am interested in punk but have found little that really fits all my interests: I like girl punk (but not exclusively), want political edge -- at least good lyrics -- and SOME melody as opposed to just relentless, driving repetition. Hmmm ... maybe that's too vague ... . I'll think on it. How's Bad Brains? Have read about them, am curious, but never heard.

Later.

Oh! And same goes if you come to Memphis. We can get together and do whatever.

...You sound even cooler than ever now.
Hell, why reconcile the contradictory elements, unless they're things that you feel need changing to make you a better person?
We get the best of all worlds.
Despite growing up in the Orlando Florida suburbs,I took really well to a place like Arkansas.
You get a few miles out town, and it's like something
Mrs O' Connor would have written about. It's like, nothing ever changed.
The crazy, eccentric cousin is displayed out on the porch for all to see, some dilapidated church is having service on a Saturday night. It's so surreal and amazing.
I would say that your assumption is pretty much correct.

Punk with a sldie guitar?
You need some of Jeffrey Lee Pierce's band,The Gun Club.Totally.
It's old stuff, and he died from living too hard, but it's amazing.
Man,16 Horsepower...Well,while not punk in an obvious way,the feel is there,and it's haunting,and beautiful,and unlike anything I've heard.
My friend Michael's band Myssourri, from Atlanta.
I think it was described as "A David Lynch cattle drive"
Think of Red House Painters on an Ennio Morricione kick..Very amazing stuff.
Ya know,Bad Brains are one of my favourite bands.
The early stuff is blistering hardcore punk, and although slightly more "metal" later, still great.
The bad part is that their singer,H.R.
(who has such a baffling, amazing voice) is a complete Rastafarian zealot, and a total homophobic dick.
He has mental problems, and while their songs don't advocate violence against homsexuals, some of his specific behavior is just plain shitty.
It's sad,as I should be amazed and in awe if I met him,but I'd more than likely knock him promptly the fuck out.
I mean,think whatever you want,but don't endorse that sort of behavior,ya know?
I ain't down with that.

I make a lot of cd-rs for friends, and could send you some stuff.
I'm pretty ecclectic, music wise and I have a hell of a lot of discs, old vinyl, and boxes and boxes of cassettes.
Most of the hardcore and punk I listen to is old stuff.I'm pretty much out of the loop on newer stuff, but I got a lot of the old records.
While I'm fucking around the house this weekend,I'll set up a few playlists of some stuff I think you might like,but beware;
My buddy in Atlanta wanted some Swans, and I sent him almost the entire catalog.
It was,as he said,"My weight in Swans cds"
