Thanks to the Fireworks

I've got a beautiful mainly black with some tan German Shepherd in our front yard.

I got this neat miniature clothes hamper-type thing for Mackenzie's toys in my car. Right now I've got tons of squeaky toys, frisbees, and balls in a bigger hamper in my backseat so I thought I would downsize. I went outside right now to try and get rid of some older/or new with tags toys (to donate) so that we could fit them in the miniature one. So of course to determine which ones to keep, I was squeaking and grunting all of them. Imagine my surprise when I turned around on a dark rainy 4th of July night at 11PM to see a black dog staring at me.

My heart started beating really fast because of how dark it was and how dark this dog was and how I was totally unprepared for it. We stared at each other for a while and I contemplated luring him closer with a toy so that I could get a look at his tags. But then he started breathing funny, like he wanted to bark at me, but couldn't figure out how.

He was almost hyperventilating at me so I started talking to him. I asked him where he lived, did the fireworks scare him, did he want to come inside with me, did he want one of my toys, why was he breathing funny, etc. We had a nice little conversation and then he wandered away so I went back to what I was doing.

Again he scared the shit out of me when I turned around several minutes later and he was really close to me. I think I spooked him that time because I had just crunched a plastic bag. We exchanged a few more words and then when I told him to GO HOME, he decided to finally bark at me. I almost jumped in my car at that point because I figured the fireworks had finally made him go crazy. He barked a few more times and shuffled down the street. I locked my car and last time I checked he was wandering around on the other side of our yard presumably looking for a place to poop.

He does have some tags from what I could see and he appears in good health.
Hopefully he finds his way home.
