Emo: Today is a fashion term, and somewhat of a matching lifestyle. Boys wear tight jeans and shirts, often being girl's jeans, and grow their hair long, sometimes cutting only the back short. They have been known to wear makeup, and as far as the lifestyle goes, try to prove that even boys can cry, and that the plight of a white middle class male is far more than meets the eye. Girls generally cut their hair short, sport piercings and heavy eyeliner, as well as be also terribly concerned with how much their life apparently has fallen to utter depression.
What I can remember as to how it all started...
The tight fitting clothes come from the very meaning behind the term. Emo: emotional, no, not let's go cry and hate ourselves, as in putting a higher priority to the intangible, not caring for material possessions. Therefore, the movement started by people simply wearing clothes until they didn't fit, or recycling old clothes from thrift stores. Don't ask me where the trans-gender sharing of clothes or the makeup came in. The hairstyle, however, also has to do with where priorities were placed, which believe it or not was not in fashion. Again I have no idea where the girl's fashion spawned from.
Unfortunately, this has transformed from a very promising social and cultural movement concerning consumerism and overall concern with serious issues, to a mockery of many, and a fetish of few. I may be completely and entirely wrong, but that's what I remember 6 years ago when I proudly labeled and explained myself as "emo". I still care for the same basic ideals, yet to label myself that in the skewed definition would certainly give a false impression.
By the way I have a final exam in four hours for my sight-singing class, and yea, I have to sing. I had a little to drink tonight as well, but don't worry Nancy, not enough to dull my overactive and wildly hopeful imagination.
