If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
If I could have one superpower, I would choose the power of mind-control. I would choose this power for several reasons. Besides having the obvious
advantages of being able to choose what others think, mind-control would give me the ability to know the thoughts of others and, as the saying goes, "walk a mile in their shoes". Mind-control would also open up several promising career choices to me in addition to giving me the ability to solve many issues, albeit in a less-than-ideal way. In any case, mind-control could be a tremendously useful skill for me to have.
The first and least important advantage that mind-control would allow me is the ability to get others to do my bidding. From helping me to get around the
opposing team's defense on the soccer field to convincing my new college
professors to give me an A on that hastily written term paper, bending the thoughts of others to my will would give nearly infinite potential to my selfishness. This is, however, the least important use of mind-control that I could employ.
The second reason that mind-control would be useful to me is that it would
allow me to see events from new perspectives. In everything I do, I have tried to be open minded, and I have always attempted to look at problems from many different angles in order to find an innovative and effective solution. Mind-control would not only allow me to know the minds and thoughts of others, thus providing more insight towards their ideas for problem-solving, but would also allow me to experience their life in a way that I could never do in my own mind and body. By living through others as well as myself, I would be able to break free from the chains of perspective and truly open my mind. I could have the experience and wisdom of entire lifetimes by the time I became a full adult.
The final reason that I would choose mind-control as my superpower - and
the most important one - is that I could use my powers to resolve various conflicts. I could stop wars or terrorist attacks simply by mentally commanding the soldiers or leaders to end the destruction. I could stop people from committing suicide or other crimes against themselves by controlling them and making them realize their true worth. I could be the most effective criminal or political negotiator of all time. As with selfishness, the potential for working for the good of others would be nearly limitless.
Although mind-control could be terribly abused, I believe that I could put its power to good use in a variety of ways. Whether to help myself personally, to help me understand others and the world, or to help me to help others, mind-control is a hugely useful power to have. It is for these reasons that I would choose it as my own.
