back to the co-ops

Ran into Megan today in the psych atrium. Her rat research is going well (evidently they get cranky and start sleeping in when they hit puberty too). I told her I'm almost certainly moving back into the co-ops, into the new grad student house. This is the third attempt the ICC is making to recolonize the old Joint House (so named because there are two houses connected by a hallway). There were pretty severe problems at Joint House, which may be related to the unfortunate name. A few years back they kicked out a bunch of problem members and moved in more responsible ones, but evidently that didn't do the trick -- as became apparent when the ICC demanded that the members choose a new name, and the vote was for Jim Jones house (named for James R. Jones, a founding member of NASCO, the North American umbrella organization for student co-ops and a longtime resident of Joint). Now the ICC is doing another forced turnover and bringing in grad students, who are not known for destructive debauchery.

Anyway, Megan told me that they were discussing another renaming for J-house, but most of the proposals were pretty weak sauce so far. One of them was a wasp genus -- someone liked the way that wasps all work together to build their homes. We, on the other hand, focused on their vicious aggression, their rigid caste system, and their pinhead-sized brains.

"If they want a eusocial animal," I asked, "why not humans?" Besides, if the house is cursed to have an easily-misunderstood name, we'd probably be pretty safe with Homo House.
