[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]
Name: John Egbert
Age: 13
Gender: Male
Canon: Homestuck
Timeline: Right after arriving on LOHAC.
Character History:
Homestuck wiki,
John's wiki!
Character Personality:
Huge. Derp. That's what John Egbert is. But that's only scratching the surface of this cheerful, overly optimistic thirteen year old whose passions involve incredibly bad movies and pranks that are almost as bad. He's one of those people that you come across that you can't help but noticing how genuine he is. He's probably the most sincere person you'll come across in his canon. He's not the type of person that will usually lie, except perhaps to himself. But it's not so much lying as just not acknowledging it or recognizing it as an issue. The sort of lying he does is light-hearted, for pranks. And if not for pranks, it’s always for a good reason, though he is mostly honest.
He's a pretty derpy kid, but derpiness does not always translate to immaturity. Of all the kids, he is the one who adapts the easiest to change and tragedy. Not because it doesn't bother him, but because he compartmentalizes it to deal with later. Most kids who saw their parent dead in front of them would just break down and not know what to do about it, but John goes after Jack instead. It speaks volumes to his maturity that he can put aside his own feelings to turn his attention to killing Jack to keep him from killing anyone else.
While John is one of the only kids who does outright act his age sometimes, with the exception of Jade, he was able to build a friendship based on trust with an extremely violent and hateful, extremely volatile alien race (with the exception of a couple of trolls). This is a race that when it comes down to talking or fighting, 9 times out of 10 they're going to try to solve their problems with violence. It's not really a race that you just befriend, but John manages to pull it off, manages to establish trusting relationships with a race that tends to even be suspicious of one another.
He trusts easily, and forgives even easier. He's not the type that would hold a grudge against anyone, even if the person was directly responsible for his death. He's always willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt and give them another chance, instead of judging harshly. And usually? He'll end up befriending the person who wronged him anyway. He's terribly naive in that regard, and will trust the people he considers friends implicitly. And those people could be his friends he's known for years, or ones he only recently met. This sometimes gets him into trouble, but that's alright. He'll forgive them anyway.
John isn't the smartest of his friends, but he certainly isn't stupid either. He’s incredibly intelligent, in his own right, but it lies more in creativity and innovation. Whether it be combining cards to make new items using the alchemiter or simply adding some wonderfully hilarious touches to something, his innovative nature knows no bounds. At times he can be a bit flighty and unfocused, and easily distracted from goals by something he thinks is cool. But he will always get back to the goal eventually, after he's had some fun. This also makes him prone to stupid ideas that he'll almost always go along with, if someone he trusts is the one who gave him that idea. Basically, he's pretty easily trolled/tricked.
But that never deters him or his goofiness. John is a goofy, nerdy kid, and he's not ashamed of it. He's a self-proclaimed pranking master and he's not at all embarrassed by interests, no matter how many times he's told that they're lame. He's very comfortable with his sense of self - there's not a lot of self-hatred going on here. And he's pretty down to Earth, and humble to boot - never accepting the title of leader, but rather the title friend and never letting his power get to his head. He's just generally good-natured and fun loving. He can get along with nearly anyone, and he usually wins over the people that don't like him initially (hi Karkat).
There's a lot under the surface of that happy air. John has a pretty solid ability to compartmentalize the bad things that happen to him. He doesn't deal with it right away, and doesn't let it affect him because he has other, more important things to do. His feelings can wait to be dealt with later. He struggles to seal it away for later and moves onto the next task that he needs to accomplish. Sometimes it takes him a while to do it, and there’s a lot of whiplash in his conversations with others as he deals with confusion and tries to cope in his way. Though two trolls have gotten him killed in time in Sburb, he's pretty unphased by it, even though for the second death he was actually able to see his own dead body. He also sees the dead bodies of his father and his friends Jade and Rose, but due to the circumstances of the game, he doesn't give himself time to mourn it- Because they have a game to win and people are counting on him to help out. The deaths of each of his friends selves or dreamselves is just one more tragedy to be tucked away, and one more reason why it's so important that he start the scratch and stop Jack.
Even though John is killed by Jack, he doesn't focus too much on it, but instead turns his attention to taking care of Rose. He follows Vriska's directions to revive her with a kiss, confused and trying to compartmentalize what’s going on. And now that his dad has been found (under terrible circumstances, but still found) and he’s pushed it to the back of his mind - a great struggle as you can see in how his conversation bounces around with Karkat while he’s in the middle of dealing with it - John turns his attention back to the plan he's supposed to be following. He leaves her there, unsure if she's alive but believing Vriska that she would be - because he has established a great amount of trust with her, to travel to the Land of Heat and Clockwork where he'll be performing the Scratch. He never gets distracted for long from his tasks, and he will always get back to what he needs to do.
He doesn't snap to judgments and judge anyone unfairly, no matter how terrible the thing they've done is. Instead of immediately telling Vriska she's a terrible person for killing Tavros, he tries to hear her out to understand why she did. He was truly interested in trying to make sense of a culture that's different from his own, instead of judging it harshly like so many kids would.
Vriska actually put it very well in a conversation with him:
AG: So because we got that chance, it means we'll never actually get to come of age and enter troll society, and see if we got what it takes.
AG: But that doesn't mean we stop growing up!
AG: I think the game knows it's always gonna be played by kids, and it always rigs it so they enter right around the cusp of sexual maturity, whatever the race is.
AG: Which kinda makes sense, since if they succeed, they've got their whole lives ahead of them to do whatever the hell they're going to do in their universe, like start repopulating and whatnot.
AG: That means the game also knows it's got to deal with all these damn kids who are coming of age while playing it!
AG: I really think how successfully they mature is tied to success in the game. It challenges the players in all the ways they need to be challenged to grow, which is different for every individual, and veeeeeeeery different for every race.
The game is rigged so that the kids are forced to mature and grow up in the game, so that if they're successful in creating a new universe, they're able to take care of it properly and help it grow to maturity. John has definitely matured over the course of his time in the game. While he hasn't lost the goofy facets of his personality, he has been faced with tough choices, like finding his dad or taking the Tumor to Rose on Derse, in which he did both by entrusting the Tumor to a friend to deliver it. Instead of completely shirking his responsibility, he makes sure that it gets done before he goes frolicking off to find his Dad. No matter how important his Dad is to him, his friends (trolls and human alike) are still at risk, and they are equally as important. He won't sacrifice another's life just so he can find his parent.
More than that, he's humble to the point it's a little frustrating. He'll outright brush off compliments of his success or abilities. He is just not the kind of person that will willingly admit that they are the leader, despite the fact that everyone in their session acknowledges it but him. He would much more prefer to be a 'friend' or a 'friendleader', that doesn't make orders and commands but rather asks people to take tasks on for him when he has something else that he must do. But when people are counting on him, he makes sure to do what they're expecting of them. Because, even though he's God Tier, he doesn't view himself as better. He's just one of their group that's trying to do his part to fix the world. All in all, he's a likable guy that goes with flow whose emotional responsiveness is slightly stunted and hard to trigger.
Character Abilities you would like to expand on further: John has several pretty amazing abilities thanks to Sburb and achieving God Tier. He is the Heir of Breath, which gives him the ability to do "the windy thing" which ranges from being able to fly to drilling a tornado through the side of a planet and even flying a car through the sky.
This is less related to super powers, but his Strife Specibus (weapon) is Hammerkind. So he wields all sorts of awesome hammers. He currently wields the
WARHAMMER OF ZILLYHOO. The fact that he wields such large hammers lends to believe that John is not really all that frail, and is more of the tankish sort.
But pretty much none of that matters here at Soul Campaign! He's just going to be your average thirteen year old with some fighting prowess and strength from being in Sburb.
Character Weaknesses you would like to expand on further:
I mentioned it in his personality, but John's biggest and main weakness is his ability to compartmentalize his feelings. Instead of dealing with his problems when he comes to them, like seeing his friends die or losing his dad or even getting killed himself, he locks them away where he doesn't have to deal with them. Sometimes it's easier for him to do that than other times, and sometimes there will be mood whiplash in his pesterlogs while he tries to compartmentalize it away.
He always manages to push trauma and problems to the furthest reaches of his mind until he thinks he has time to deal with it. And due to the nature of the game he's playing, he hasn't had a time to slow down and deal with any of things that he's been holding onto and ignoring. There is only so much tragedy that one person can hold, though, and while John hasn't found his breaking point, there is a pretty good chance that he's close to it.
[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]
What abilities will your character retain in Soul Campaign?
John will retain a good bit of his strength, as it wasn't endowed on him through the game but simply his own ability to wield heavy hammers and objects.
What weaknesses will your character lose or gain in Soul Campaign?
John will gain the weakness that is caused by losing his God Tier and his abilities as the Heir of Breath. No immortality, no flying around, no giant tornadoes. He'll be pretty average again, which is how he was before Sburb started, so John wouldn't really consider it much of a weakness, though it definitely will be one.
The wish Death the Kid made to the BREW in 2009 was to “rescue Death City and stop the waves of Madness from overtaking the world.” By whatever means necessary. Pretend you are the BREW. Why would you choose to bring this character to Death City?
John is the big damn hero of his tale. Well, he's one of them, at least. And though he'll dispute it, he's considered the leader of his session. He has all of the qualities of a hero, and the subtle qualities that make him a good leader. His innate desire to help other people would make him a great candidate for BREW to bring in to help in the fight.
If your character has difficulty verbally communicating or can’t verbally communicate at all (mute or non-humanoid), elaborate on how this will be treated in the game. (Skip if this doesn’t apply)

[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]
Why is your character a Meister and not a Weapon?
Bear in mind that Meisters and Weapons are meant to be equals in partnerships: a Meister does not control the Weapon. We will not accept the reason if it is related to this.
John is better supporting others. Whether it's supporting his friends or supporting himself, John has a strong foundation that isn't easily cracked. And while that would make him a great Weapon, it would leave him in a comfort zone that he doesn't have to leave. John tends to go along with the flow and doesn't really ever control a situation. Being a Meister, being put in the position where someone is depending on him to actually lead them would be little different from his "friendleadering". He would be responsible for someone else, and would be responsible for taking care of them. It could challenge and make him grow by forcing him out of his comfort zone as a support.
What is your character’s Meister Ability? Why?
Soul Levitate - When playing in Sburb, due to his God Tier, John was able to fly and feels comfortable fighting from the sky.
Soul BFF - As mentioned in his personality, John is an amiable guy, and gets along with pretty much everyone!
Soul Armor - From experience in the game, John frequently has to fight multitudes of enemies and for long periods of time without rest.
[ SOUL INFORMATION ]
Describe your character’s soul with six adjectives.
friendly, optimistic, heroic, supportive, goofy, self-effacing
What does your character’s soul look like? Be creative.
John's soul is blue. It has glasses and an overbite to match his own and the wisps at the top are messy to replicate the trainwreck that is his hair. It looks like

and i guess i am here to help out!

John gripped the handle of his newest hammer as he moved onto his destination. He had wanted to stay with Rose, but he had important things to do that everyone was counting on him for. Vriska had said Rose would be alright, so he had to trust that. He had to start the Scratch before Jack could continue this senseless murder spree. He had to protect his friends, avenge his-
His thought fell short of completion and he blinked tiredly, trying to keep the ground beneath him in focus as darkness teased at the corners of his vision. He'd reached the Land of Heat and Clockwork, and he was almost where he needed to be for the Scratch, but suddenly he felt so sleepy. It's not like he hadn't been to sleep in a while. It seemed like he'd been doing a lot of sleeping and resting (unintentionally) since he'd gotten in the game, whether it be sudden naps or getting stabbed and being forced out of commission. His hand idly went to his chest at the thought, but it fell away just as he landed on hard surface and his legs gave way underneath him.
Had he really been that tired? Or maybe it had to do with dying? He couldn't figure it out in time before his eyes slipped shut. When they opened again, it was not to an area he recognized. Instead of looking out over LOHAC, he was staring at a wall. He was in a room? He didn't remember going anywhere else, and it didn't look like anything on Skaia or Prospit that he could recall. He sat up, hand reaching to retrieve his weapon from his strife deck. If imps were around, it'd be a bad idea to be unprepared. But the hammer was no where to be found. None of his weapons were, now that he checked. Oh man, had he been caught or something?
"Hello? Is anybody there?" It was about the time that he spoke that the screens thrummed to life on the walls, and he turned his attention to them. "Whoa!"
He listened attentively, taking in the story without much adverse reaction to the explanation. So he'd been kidnapped to help people? Well, that was kind of weird! But it sounded like he had new powers, or something. He wondered if it was something like Sburb. He didn't like the idea of abandoning his responsibilities though. He'd been doing something really important! Or he'd been about to, at least. But he really only had one choice in the situation, didn't he?
"I will help if I can! Because I really need to get back to what I was doing. A lot of people are kind of counting on me right now!"
[ NOTES ]
john has a typing quirk.
in which he types in blue and doesn't really capitalize anything!
but he does use punctuation.
and sometimes he uses it a little excessively and in intervals of 8, a habit he picked up from vriska.
sometimes he breaks this pattern to CAPITALIZE THINGS.
he also sometimes uses emotes. :)
