I Love My Arctic Land
Brenda Kanayuk, age 17 (Pond Inlet)

I love my Arctic land very much
When I see the mountains of Bylot Island
My body greets them because
My troubles, fears and sadness
Drift away
Oh, how I love my Arctic land.

I love my Arctic land very much
When I observe the sea water of Eclipse Sound
My mind greets it because
The sound of the waves splashing
On the shores relaxes my inner confusion
Oh, how I adore my Arctic land.

I love my Arctic land very much
When I see the animals of seals and caribou
My hunger greets them because seeing them
Fills up my stomach with admiration
Oh, how I love my Arctic land.

I love my Arctic land very much
When I observe the tundra of Pond Inlet
My feelings greet it because
It gives me pride in my identity
Oh, how I love my Arctic land.

Isn't it sad - the Arctic land is melting away? I wish more people could go and be in the Arctic and let it take their breath away. I read somewhere that 90% of Canadians live within 150km of the U.S.-Canada border. If Canadians only knew what dwells in their northern backyard! If they knew, they would care...and they might even try to save it.
