There's an idea I came up with while watching Foyle's War this easter, and told my dad about while we were doing the dishes.
There really should be a crime show from World War II taking place in a country occupied by the Nazis.
Think about it. If relatively free, if plagued by bomb raids, England was as affected as we see in Foyle's War, how much more would a country like Norway, Denmark or France be affected?
In addition to solving the mystery, the main character would have to navigate between his own country's resistance fighters, people casually breaking the law because hey, it was set by or as a result of the occupants (like my great-uncle, who claims that everyone were smuggling extra food into town from the surrounding farms), and the Germans themselves.
If the crime was committed by a local person against a German soldier, does he give said local person up to them?
If the crime involves resistance fighters, does he still pursue?
If the crime was committed by a German soldier but not in the course of duty, will he be able to pursue?
I think the political aspect of this would add some extra spice to a crime show. It would very often end frustratingly, which is normal in the course of an occupation.
But really, we need another show from an occupied country besides 'Allo! 'Allo!.
