I love how excited Stamford is with helping and I loved the line "This would give me the added advantage of not strangling him where he lay" It seems so Watsonian

I know you said it's book!Verse, but I weirdly can picture years, YEARS down the line Law!Watson doing this simply because strangling Holmes would not be the greatest plan.

It also made me laugh hysterically at the image of Holmes laying back on the mattresses with a merry smile and a pipe in his mouth.
