Because the old one was embarrassingly outdated

Dec 17, 2011 01:54

I did one of these back in July of 2010, but different bits of headcanon and so on have changed/been developed since then, so I decided to do a new one.

Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Aaron is fairly tall at right around 5'10", though he is underweight due to four years of war and the effects there of. He's scrawny with hip bones jutting out and ribs showing, and has a tired/haggard look about him.

2. How old is he?
Physically, he looks to be in his mid to late twenties. Politically he's stuck at right around four years, and in all he's 79 since I have the headcanon he showed up in 1787 (the Philadelphia Convention in 1787, in which the Southern states threatened to walk out over the issue of slavery).

3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
He's proud and tall, and so more often has proper posture. However, when he's more relaxed, he may slouch a bit or otherwise try to get more comfortable.

4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
He tends to avoid questions about his health, but it's really not all that good. He often feels tired and depends on whiskey and cigarettes to get him through the day, attempts to dull the edge of the pain of being a dissolved Nation, occupied by a enemy army including martial law and military districts, and the social unrest in general.

5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
He moves in fluid movements unless upset, though he's also clumsy. He'll often walk into things or trip over them.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
He's attractive, and would be more so if he was healthy. On the other hand, he tends to see his brother in the mirror rather than himself, and so doesn't see what's attractive about him. He's just...Aaron, plain and simple.

7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
His skin is lightly tanned, more so during the summer. His scars are still pretty fresh and so fairly easily seen when exposed, which are nearly everywhere on him.

8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
He has blonde hair, though it's more of a dull, wheat blonde with a tint of red. So it's basically a dark strawberry blonde. It's coarse, and slightly longer than the North's. As for style, it tends to be a bit messy since he often just runs his fingers through it and that's about it.

9. What color are his eyes?
Dark, stormy grey. Confederate grey, basically.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
He does have a cowlick, because it's impossible to find fanart that doesn't include it. Obviously, it does not represent the Northern Nantucket. Instead, his represents the Virginia Peninsula.

11. What are his chief tension centers?
His back and shoulders, mainly.

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
More laidback clothes for his time period mostly, though there are a few proper suits. He tends towards neutral or dark colors, finding bright ones and pastels too gaudy. It's fairly varied, since he tries to have a outfit for whatever occasion that comes up.

13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
The newer ones do, his older outfits from before the war are slightly big on him however, since they don't account for the lost weight. As a result he's more comfortable in his newer clothes, though he does still like some of the shirts for sleeping since they're comfortable. He'll avoid wearing the pants if he can help it.

14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
In his free time he'll wear the casual clothes, however on business he doesn't mind too terribly dressing up nice in his suits or his uniform. He just finds it troublesome to dress up all the time.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
If they had those in his time period, I think he'd be more comfortable in boxers. Starting the 1850s I believe it was, up until WW1, the underwear men wore were long johns.

Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
It's...in between? His voice isn't high-pitched, but it's not very deep either. There is a bit of a rough quality to it however.

2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
He tends to speak softly, though he doesn't really have any problems raising his voice. He typically speaks easily, but when talking about himself for example, he can pause and hesitate. Occasionally he'll trail off to try to figure out how to word something or find the word he's looking for.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
He speaks in his thick Southern accent, the dialect varies. If he's speaking to a Texan, he'll slip into a Texan dialect just like how if he's speaking to a Virginian, he'll slip into a Virginian dialect. Normally he'll speak in a Alabamian dialect, since in my headcanon he resides mainly in Montgomery (Montgomery was the first capital of the Confederacy, and also nicknamed the "cradle of the Confederacy"). If he's nervous, embarrassed, or otherwise unnerved he might stutter.

4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
English obviously, he can speak Creole French, Mexican Spanish, and the languages of the Southern tribes as well. There's also a Little Germany in New Orleans, LA in his time period, so I imagine he'd have a basic understanding of German. He's most comfortable using English, though the French and Spanish is also fluent. Out of the Native American tribes, Cherokee is the most fluent.

5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
If asked he'll slow down and enunciate more. Besides that, if he was speaking to certain people, such as France or Mexico and Spain, he might use the French and Spanish he knows.

6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
Typically he doesn't have much trouble, however depending on the topic or circumstances at hand, he might pause and/or be more careful with his words.

7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
This kind of depends on the subject. If he's talking about himself or his wants, he often becomes more inarticulate than if he was speaking on something else.

Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
He's more street-smart than book-smart. He has a bit of a selective intellegence when it comes to book-smarts: he knows quite a bit on subjects that interest him or things he needs to know, however on other subjects he can be as clueless as a brick.

2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
Typically on his feet, though when the situation calls for it he'll stop and deliberate in order to ensure he achieves his own ends.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
He's more practical than idealistic, and is honestly about 50/50 between logical and intuitive. He'll consider both what seems logical and what his instincts tell him to reach a decision, for example.

4. What kind of education has the character had?
There was formal education when he was a child, after that it became more informal. If he didn't know something he learned it, but it was almost more a passing fancy or personal research than any actual education.

5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
Uhm...he's a soldier, he's familiar with the weapons and tactics in his own time period. He's good at treating injuries (again his knowledge is limited to his own time) and knows folk remedies for illnesses. He's a animal person and is good at taking care of them. If you don't mind comfort food and lots of butter he's awesome at cooking. He's always interested in learning new things he could put to good use.

6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
He's more of a introvert really. He's more likely to pretend nothing is wrong and pretend he's calm and collected and in control, not let anyone else see how much something may affect him. Furthurmore Aaron's two-faced and often will use psuedo-identities as a means to the end he wants, so has learned to not give himself away by being extroverted.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
He's got a catty type of personality. Aloof, tempermental, stubborn, and yet sweet and extremely affectionate when he wants to be. He's good-natured and there's typically little depth to his complaints, though the War for Southern Independence does have a way of either riling him up, or making him more melancholy. When he's working towards a goal he is driven, though during periods of inactivity he'll be more laid back.

8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
Compared to before the war, he has become far more guarded, untrusting of others, and far more observant of their behavior. Outside of his soldier's mask, he has difficulty allowing others to get too close to him or vise versa, because he has difficulty trusting them. Though once he becomes comfortable around the new person, he may start to relax and open up a bit more, that part mainly depends on the impression they give him.

9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
I think react? More often than not it's outside circumstances, the current situation or the actions of others, that motivate him to act himself, rather than being the first to act. He's more likely to sit back and watch unless he feels the need to step in.

10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
It depends. If it was a verbal argument for example, he'll leave instead of letting the situation escalate, but if were a actual fight, well...he'd stay and fight.

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
He can be quite playful and has a good sense of humor. He finds bathroom humor improper, but there was so much gallows humor during the war it doesn't really bother him anymore. He's prone to playing little games or jokes on people.

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
He does have Stockholm Syndrome (which is only beginning to set in in his time), due to a rp partner and myself working out why, despite having a vengeful streak, he doesn't try to actually harm the North. It not something he actually recognizes, and it didn't have the name until much much later. A direct result of the war against him however, is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, namely the experiences and conditions he suffered during it, especially towards the end with such things as the March to the Sea or the burning of Richmond. He is a bit unstable (which seems very much like Borderline Personality Disorder) since the war and has always had a...different view point, but he's not insane or something. He tries to take it one day at a time, to varying degrees of success.

13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
First and foremost, secession and the War for Southern Independence, along with Reconstruction following. He's the Confederate States, not the American South, so outside of that, nothing would really affect him.

14. What does he fear?
Dying in a way he doesn't want (if it comes to that he knows he wouldn't be able to prevent it, but he doesn't want to give up what control he still has), being abandoned (he doesn't mind being alone, he just doesn't want it to be because everybody left him), or being forgotten. He also has the fear of snakes and of snow. The fears of snakes originally started because due to happenings in a game, we...kinda needed something to get to him. I thought of snakes due to the Anaconda Plan, which obviously would not of itself make him fear snakes. The headcanon was developed that he was bitten by a copperhead as a child. As for the snow, the winter of 1864. Soldiers were freezing to death in the snow, and the CSA wasn't exempt. He nearly froze to death, and after being shot by grapeshot in the heart during the Battle of Nashville, he did die in the snow. (Due to still existing as a Nation at the time, he later returned). The freezing feeling terrifies him.

15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
He had wanted to be able to secede peacefully, and failing that, win the war. However, now his only real goal is simply surviving.

16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
His condition. He doesn't want anyone realizing how weak and vunerable he really is.

Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
He doesn't have any actual parents though General Robert E. Lee was like a father-figure to him. Though originally nicknamed "Granny" Lee, General Lee became very much respected and loved by Southerners.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
United States of America and more by extension, Canada. He actually was never terribly close to Canada, though CSA does find him easier company than the North. As a child, he was very dependant on his near mirror-image twin and was very close to him, however recent events have drove the two apart.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
He doesn't view any others as being blood relatives.

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
Unlike the rest of the British Isles, he does think of Ireland as a aunt. This is due to the Ireland I've rp'd with whose character thought of CSA as a nephew. Besides her, the rest of the North American Nations could fit into this category. Most he has no opinion on due to not really having any dealing with them, with the exception of Mexico who...did send him supplies during the war and Southern soldiers escaped to Mexico, so CSA figures he's okay as a result. They weren't very close, and so CSA opinion on Mexico like the rest is rather basic.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
He's really pretty much on his own. In his own time period, he doesn't view anyone as a friend.

6. Does he have other close friends?
His "boys", the soldiers. Otherwise, same as above.

7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
He has trouble with it. He's too guarded, wary, and untrusting.

8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
Due to the lack of others, he considers blood to be thicker than water, even while he is distant from those he would call family.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
Single, and never married. Aaron tends to get into little flings and one night stands, not actual relationships.

10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
As stated above, he's in no romantic relationship at all. If he was, Aaron's the type to be monogamous. This is mainly due to a jealous nature in him.

11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
I do ship NorthxSouth and UKxCSA, so...if it was canon, it'd be in that order.

12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
It’d…likely take a special sort to be able to handle someone like Aaron, who is so infamously hard to handle. It’d have to be someone who could handle being strong for/with him, and yet yielding. Uhm…hell, it’d take a special sort just to get the guy to trust them, let alone be willing to open up as much as an actual relationship kinda requires.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
No, and with disappearing being a real threat, he doesn't want any either. If does have children, he'd want to be there for them.

14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
The Union obvious, he did just fight a war against him. There's also Russia, which is really more along the lines of 'the ally of my enemy is my enemy'.

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?
Aaron would be about a four or five, I think. He’s bisexual, but he does tend to lean towards other men rather than women. Personally, I think all the Nations would be bisexual, and on top of that out of the Nations there are more males than females, and what does the Confederacy has to do with Hungary or the other female Nations? If he was staying with his own kind rather than humans, it'd be a male Nation like England or the North.

16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
It's a means to a end, a stress relief, and a creature comfort on the same vein as eating or sleeping. He doesn't put any emotions in it, it's just something pleasurable that could be used to persuade someone to give him something he wants.

17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Turn-ons: Biting, being dominated, being rough, though if he's with someone he's close to gentle and loving is good too, also those times he'd prefer facing and being able to see who he's with, having fingers running through his hair, oddly enough butterfly kisses along his neck or jaw, his scars being touched, being bent over something. Also awfully fond of being held tightly.

Turn-offs: While he doesn't mind mild bondage, like being handcuffed, he'll argue against anything more, especially if he doesn't really know the person he's with. He doesn't really mind mild pain, but again he'll argue against anything more. Going into actual s&m is a no-no. He also doesn't like the scars on his upper back being touched at all. The other scars really depend on who it is and how close they are to him.

Weird bedroom habits: Not really weird, but nothing makes Aaron compliant quite like fantastic sex, he also tends to be rather cuddly after, and if he's with a partner he cares for he's likely to just shower them with affection, or take the oppurtunity to map out their body, trace patterns here and there with his fingers, etc.

Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
Western is Sagittarius, the centaur. It actually matches pretty well; optimistic, good natured, fun loving, and enthusiastic. And fiery, ha.
Chinese, metal monkey. This...actually fits. Innovative, improviser, polite, and yet still egoistic. And for the metal; determined, rigid, persistence and strength. If I got this one right. The Chinese zodiac kinda confuses me.

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
During Antebellum, Aaron was more religious. During the war, he lost faith entirely. Even in modern times, he only goes to churches on certain days, such as Christmas or Easter. However, despite losing that faith, he often finds himself on his knees in prayers during particularly tough times. To Aaron, it wasn't that he lost faith in God, it's that God lost faith in him.

On this vein, while he can't see things like England's unicorns or fairies, Aaron is able to see "American" things like Thunderbirds or Bigfoot. He can also see ghosts. He isn't as easily frightened of the supernatural as Alfred, but he doesn't necessarily like them either. In fact, he's more comfortable with a ghost than what could be classified as a "monster", likely due to a ghost having been a human or something else familiar to him, while a jackalope for example could be considered more unnatural. He rarely will make any mention or this and so few know, both to avoid ridicule and because he doesn't want to run the risk of calling anything to him.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
General Lee, and "Stonewall" Jackson especally, always drove home the point that duty was more important than pretty much anything else. So he does whatever he determines is right, and as for getting in his way or trying to make him compromise...luck and logic.

4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
He's a bit lacking in tolerance, though at the same time it depends on what these beliefs are. He's a curious type of person, so he's rarely indifferent.

5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
...can I just get away with saying "19th century" and "slave power"... He is racist, and he is a bit sexist to a extent. He's a product of his time period and enviroment.

Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
He was more comfortable in Antebellum, now though he is painfully penniless.

2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
Aaron's a soldier, and as such he strives to behave as one. This much hasn't changed. As the Confederate States, he's a dissolved Nation. He's become insecure over this fact, and feels inferior to the other Nations.

3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
During the war, anywhere from a tent to a ditch to the shelled out husk of a plantation house. Whatever was handy. He has three properties though. The main one is in Montgomery, Alabama (the "cradle of the Confederacy"). The other two are in Richmond, Virginia (the capital since Virginia seceded until it was captured; this house is currently ruins that will later be rebuilt), and Charleston, South Carolina (the "birthplace of the Confederacy")

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
He has a fondness for guns and blades, though besides necessities, he saves what money he has.

5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
I don't suppose former Nation counts as a job description. Soldier, otherwise. He's a good shot, if a bit lacking in disipline. Though in a way that's evened out by the way even if he lacked disipline, he'd still do whatever was ordered. Maybe not the...safest or smartest way, but by god it'd get done.

6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
He loves being outside, though he'd also be content reading a book or something. He'd be just as likely walking the streets of Richmond as he would be in a library or horseplaying around somewhere.

7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
He tends to eat fast though neatly, out of habit of not knowing when his next meal would be or when the Yankees would start firing. He can't eat too much at once though, and if he tries anyway he'll just make himself sick. He's often too lazy or tired to make a proper meal for himself, so is prone to skipping them. He drinks, though it's more to dull the physical pain he feels and settle those less than stable mental operations than to get drunk. He isn't picky and so doesn't really avoid any foods, unless it's something even he views as absolutely horrible like...haggis or something.

Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his favorite:

1. Color? Grey. He prefers earth-y colors, like greens, browns, or autumn reds and oranges.
2. Smell? Magnolias and honey, along with whiskey and tobacco.
3. Time of day? Sunset.
4. Season? Late summer.
5. Book? The Blue and the Grey: The Civil War as Told by Participants. He doesn't have a particular favorite.
6. Music? Marches, definitly. Especally Dixie and the Bonnie Blue Flag.
7. Place? Outside, or somewhere in the South
8. Substance? Whiskey
9. Plant? Confederate Rose or Confederate Jasmine. Magnolias and Cotton, too.
