History:
Zethel was one of the original created angels, endowed with the Purpose of Healing (and specifically gifted with Healing her brothers and sisters). She was more than happy to come to Earth when the Father sent the angels down, believing with all her heart that the beauty of mankind and their world was worth interacting with in person. She gained a reputation among the earth-bound angels as a kind, clever, and cheerful figure, almost a matriarchal figure.
When the Plague swept Europe, Zethel tried desperately to help as many people as she could, and it was hardly surprising when human Hunters took advantage of that to ensnare and enslave her. Recognizing the valuable property they had in their hands, the pair of Hunters who captured her took her straight to the home of a local nobleman -- Philip Gale, the Third Baron Gale, who had four children all suffering from the Plague. The Baron purchased the angel on the spot, and Zethel, despite her deeply conflicted feelings over her situation, could not ignore the suffering around her; she successfully healed not only the Baron's family, but many other members of his household.
Philip was overcome with gratitude, realizing that his new slave had most likely saved his title and household from dying out entirely. He rewarded Zethel with a level of freedom and regard few captive angels were afforded, elevating her to the position of housekeeper and promising her that he would make provisions to keep her safe and cared for so long as his line survived. While she was still a slave, Zethel had found a home and a place to fulfill her Purpose.
The Third Baron made good on his promise, drawing up legal contracts to ensure that she would remain the property of the Barons Gale in perpetuity. For centuries, Zethel served the household as head housekeeper, Healer, teacher, and adviser; and while some of the Baron's descendants made for better masters than others, on the whole Zethel was cherished by the Barons and Baronesses as something very close to a member of the family. The world changed; slavery grew more widespread and in many ways more brutal. And Zethel, from her position of relative safety and comfort, watched it all and subtly used her influence to do everything she could to help her family.
The Gale line gradually dwindled over time, and the last surviving holder of the title died without children in 1980. Before his death, the last Baron Gale called Zethel into his study and gave her back the binding ring that had passed from one generation of his family to another; it was only right, he said, that she should be rewarded with her freedom now that there were no Gales left to serve.
After the death of her former Master, friends of the family helped Zethel leave England with a modest sum of money and the most important of her possessions (among them a silver
chatelaine which had served as the symbol of her status as head housekeeper to the Barons Gale). She found her way to Los Angeles, where she quickly made contact with the member of the Underground, both human and angelus. Since the mid-1980s she had served as the head of a safehouse for fugitive angels; the location has moved several times, but Zethel has been a calm, safe, and steadying presence to all who find their way to her home's safe harbor.
