"Sense & Sensibility (2008)," A Story in Pictures - Part Two

May 13, 2008 23:51

I finally did it! Two down, one to go. ;) I'm sorry this took a little while - after the last picspam, I wasn't feeling like making another too soon afterwards. I think I did most of this today, actually. It feels like I went crazy, but I don't think there's any more pictures than last time.

I'm glad that so many of you enjoyed the first part that I did. Hope you enjoy this second part!

We start off with the Dashwoods getting ready for the dance. It's cute and - well, nothing much has changed in the last two hundred years, eh? Marianne is crushing on Willoughby and wants to choose the right dress. Elinor encourages her in their sisterly way. ("I'm sure Willoughby will be enthralled no matter what you wear" or something to that effect.)

Elinor war right. ;) But somebody else notices Marianne, too. Colonel Brandon is so sweet with his wanting to protect her. "What are your intentions with Miss Marianne Dashwood?" Willough, "..." *rolls eyes*

These scenes remind me of the latest Pride & Prejudice with Rosamund Pike as Jane squeeing over Simon Woods. So cute!

Gah, this series is just so gorgeous. I love the location right by the sea, in the grassy hills... And oh, poor Elinor pining over Edward! Hattie Morahan is wonderful as Elinor.

And here's another "Andrew Davies knows best" scene. :P Colonel Brandon is mourning the loss of any potential he might have had for gaining Marianne's affections, and Sir John is cheering him up by suggesting he should try after Elinor instead. (I don't think Brandon is very impressed.)

Those rebellious teenage lovers! Look at Marianne, looking all mischievous and pleased with herself. (Dominic Cooper looks a little creepy in that first cap, though...)

More pretties. I thought this was a cute scene with Elinor and Margaret. I loved Lucy Boynton as Margaret. (It will be fun to keep an eye on her as an actress, too. She's already popped up in Ballet Shoes and Miss Potter!) Strawberries and peaches, what a treat!

Colonel Brandon was so looking forward to having an afternoon picnic with his guests (especially Marianne, of course) but an important letter calls him away. Oh, the angst! I love knowing the story already and appreciating that deeper level. After not knowing anything for ages, he has finally found his dear ward. Of course, the rest of the party knows nothing and Marianne is eager to run away with Willoughby for the day.

I suppose this is like Marianne's version of Edward's "almost proposal" to Elinor. There's such an expectation there, and you know that she's given her whole heart to Willoughby. There's even a sense that Willoughby has fallen for Marianne, too. Like they said on the DVD commentary, Marianne could very well have ended up like the other girl that Willoughby seduced (who, ironically, Colonel Brandon is off rescuing) but there's something that stops Willoughby. Charity Wakefield is so innocent-looking, hopeful, and trusting in this scene. And the music is so pretty!

Again, more pretties. ;) Marianne is head over heels. It's kind of ironic that Marianne gets a tragic ending with Willoughby while she romanticizes the tragic endings of poems and plays. Isn't there even a quote at the beginning about how she thinks it's the most wonderful thing to die for love? Or maybe it's just in the 1995 movie, but anyway...

Marianne doesn't have to wait long for the "tragedy" to begin...

I just think this is sweet. Despite Elinor's doubts about Willoughby she only wants to comfort Marinne as best she can.

*wants to squeeze Marianne, and all the pretty shots* I suppose this is Marianne's version of Elinor's hilltop scene at the beginning of this episode.

And we're back with more Edward and Elinor scenes! Edward has been pretty absent, but now he's making that visit he promised to make. Hattie Morahan is just so cute when she realizes it's Edward! E/E are so adorable...

More pretty shots thrown in for good measure. Plus, this lets you know that we've transitioned to nighttime. ;)

Ohhhhhh, so many good things happening in this scene! Okay, well maybe "good" isn't the right word but still. First, despite her romantic nature and her tendency to get wrapped up in herself, Marianne is still aware of her sister's feelings. It's so cute when she tries to get Edward to sit beside Elinor (even though her match-making attempts are embarrassingly obvious). Elinor is a mish-mash of emotions - excited that he's finally here but confused at the cold shoulder he's giving her. And ohmygoodness, Dan Stevens slays me with his awkward, dorky looks! Poor Edward. He can't say anything he wants to... *cue the song "Secret Heart" by Feist: "This very secret that you're trying to conceal is the very same one that you're dying to reveal..."*

OHMYGOODNESS, can you say "wet shirt scene"?! Okay, so it's cheesy and obvious, but it's not as cheesy as the shirtless-Edward-in-the-hot-sun scene they were planning. And Hattie Morahan looks gorgeous - the shawl in the rain worked so perfectly. AND THE ANGST. Guh.

I'm sensing a parallel with Willoughby's goodbye - only in the sense that it's very unsatisfying. Poor Elinor and Edward!

Marianne noticed the lock of hair in Edward's ring and thinks it's Elinor's. Elinor has her doubts, but secretly she hopes it is hers too...

AHHHH the Steele sisters! These two were fabulous. Anne Steele was hilarious, with her accent and all her talks about beaux. It was also interesting to see Anna Madeley as Lucy, since I've only seen her in The Secret Life of Mrs. Beeton. I love the expressions on Marianne's and Elinor's faces.
It's crazy that right after the comic relief comes the knife the Elinor's heart. You can just see her heart breaking a little, and yet now everything makes sense.

Getting ready and then on their way to London. I love the pictures they've got in Elinor's room in the cap on the left - a nice touch. (Though I think they just made up Elinor's painting for this series, didn't they? I don't think it's in the book.)

These scenes were rather funny with Marianne doing everything she could to see Willoughby as soon as possible.

YAY more Colonel Brandon! I believe this is when he comes to confirm Marianne and Willoughby's engagement (a rumour which is of course untrue). The expression on Marianne's face when she sees it is "only" Brandon, and his being snubbed and quite aware of it... *hugs Brandon* Yet I can't help but squee at the relief he must feel finding out that they're not engaged!

Elinor points out how rude Marianne was to Brandon, but Marianne doesn't care because "he's not Willoughby."

Things are looking up for Marianne when there's a large ball held, and everyone is attending. I like that shot of when she's entering, the one they used in the promos. She's looking for Willoughby, but Brandon notices her as soon as she's there.

Cue the scene where Marianne's heart breaks. I love how they've brought Colonel Brandon in to the rescue. Ohhh, David Morrissey, you make me melt! The way he catches her, and glares at Willoughby...

In fact, that glare deserves it's own cap. Willoughby, you're so dead.

(three_nails, I hope it's okay that I'm using your "preview" idea! It's cause you're so smart and creative. ;D)
