I started watching the Sense & Sensibility commentary tonight when I was babysitting (after the kids were in bed, of course). When they got to the part about Barton Cottage - when the Dashwood family is moving in - they were talking about how they filmed the interior scenes on a stage, so essentially, the inside of the house was bigger than the outside. So the one guy (eek, can't remember who he is) says, "it's kind of TARDIS-like." My Doctor Who fangirl self squeed lots at that. I love unexpected, random Doctor Who references, and crossovers between two things that don't usually go together.
The DVD is pretty good! I haven't watched Miss Austen Regrets yet, but I'm looking forward to that. There's a nice slideshow of S&S pictures which included pictures I haven't seen before (set to the beautiful theme composed by Martin Phipps). The commentary looks like it's for all three episodes, which is unusual, but lovely! There's also a radio special about Jane Austen, I think.
The interview was disappointing, though. I was hoping we'd have the cool behind the scenes stuff that is on the PBS site, but no, it's just a half hour of Andrew Davies talking about how he's God's gift to perfecting Jane Austen's work. *sigh* I have to admit, he does great stuff - just look at the three new ITV adaptations, and Northanger Abbey is most definitely superior, &c. - but he's so full of himself. His name is even on the front cover of the DVD! At least Jane Austen's name is first, but his name isn't far behind. *facepalm* What about Sandy Welch? She's done a fantastic job with Our Mutual Friend and Jane Eyre but she hasn't got much recognition. What's that? *gasp* Adaptations that were wonderful and did not have the golden-Davies touch? *rolls eyes*
But yes, other than my growing dislike for Andrew Davies and his growing god-like status to the world of period drama, I'm very pleased with my S&S DVDs. Plus, the case and everything is so pretty!! It's packaged to look kind of like a book - the outside is like a book cover rather than the typical plastic DVD cover, if that makes sense.
Of course, I've always been biased towards this adaptation. It's two of my favourite things together. Jane Austen + BBC miniseries = something I can't resist! ;)
