Tiffany: IS TROUBLE LOL I like the song (more without the music video and that doesn't happen often!) and I totally agree with you that maybe we should look at it more like a performance song than a song. And SM keeps trying to innovate/push the envelope but I don't think they even know what their goal is. (aka SM Art lol) I do like that there is a lot experimenting esp with Shinee/DBSK (they kind of spared EXO). And honestly, I think that's what really sets their agency apart from YG/etc? They try stuff that might not work (but will still work because THEY ARE SO DAMN POPULAR).
I just watched Soshi's Dancing Queen perf on M Countdown.. SO OLD SCHOOL. I love how they mirrored the concept onto Gee even though it was last minute. WHO DOES THE CONCEPTUAL DIRECTING BECAUSE I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO MEET THEM.
Also I feel like Taeyeon is SO great in IGAB music video/performances. Like she is usually great in MVs but I think IGAB just illuminates how incredibly versatile/talented she is. Insane.
Taeyeon has been KILLING IT in the live performances (you know, all two of them) of IGAB. She's SO into the choreo, you'd never know she's not one of the best dancers. Damn, girl. And her vocals are just so strong and stable nowadays, my jaw was hanging wide open during the entire Romantic Fantasy show. I'm usually a little cringey at her final solo bit of Genie, for example, but she owned it. "The Boys" was a really great concept for Jessica (she had soooo many lines in every song omg) but Taeyeon is really standing out again for IGAB. I'm happy for her.
Yessssss, I think there is a lot of punch in the new song which makes it really fun/powerful (tbh I didn't feel it in The Boys) which I didn't know was her thing but IGAB is totally her element. A+ Queen Tae!
(aka SM Art lol) laughing so hard at this YOU HAVE NO IDEA. SM is so weird about their trying stuff though like -- sometimes I can't tell the difference between formulaic not-trying SM and trying SM. IT TOTALLY JUST OCCURRED TO ME TODAY THAT DANA AND SUNDAY'S SONG LAST YEAR ALSO DIDN'T FLOW LIKE A NORMAL POP SONG??? So it could arguably be a predecessor of this too? But at the time it seemed like the most standardly boring SM title track ever.
OMG WASN'T THE STYLING WITH THE SKIRTS SO GREAT??
She's been amazing! I was watching one of the MR-removed performances and there was this part of me that wished they were, as a group, a little closer to her level in the singing department?? It'd just be awesome to hear the group parts with more harmony/anyone but her and Seohyun singing :/ I mean I'm not ACTUALLY expecting more, it's kpop and everyone actually sounds pretty good?? But it would be cool to hear this song done with nine genuinely strong singers.
dude Dana and Sunday make me kind of sad? Like the general neglect of them...
I can't tell the difference between formulaic not-trying SM and trying SM LOLLLLL I would say the SJ/f(x) were pretty formulaic last year (not sure what Spy was tho)....
But it would be cool to hear this song done with nine genuinely strong singers. I totally agree Taeyeon and Seohyun carry the group singing-wise. It can really take away from the songs (esp in live performances).
I also wish they had like SM The Voice (I felt compelled to name it that bc for some reason they name these units like they name OC episodes) or something where it's just the strong singers and they can do a co-ed crossover unit. Like stuff they do at SM Town concerts BUT NOT IN ENGLISH.
And honestly sometimes SM just doesn't let some people sing? TBH MINHO ISN'T REALLY THAT BAD and he is usually more on tune than Key. also isn't this sad:
yeah sorta but also... idk? I found that whole promo cycle kind of sweet. Like, CJSH is pretty much SM's one recent real flop, and they've BASICALLY broken up, and I doubt that the Dana/Sunday promos were particularly profitable for them... but they still let them do it, you know?? It's Zhang Liyin that makes me really sad.
Okay yeah, but idk, the DBSK stuff was sort of on the border to me?? Like. I don't know. In certain moods I would say it was experimental (the dubstep was new!) but in other moods I would say it was still super formula and still pretty uninteresting. I guess it's that even when they experiment it frequently comes out kinda formula?? Maybe?? And lol Spy! It reminded me a lot of Suju's older stuff, actually.
I do think Jessica's genuinely a strong singer, although a lot of people (you included) don't like her voice, which... is understandable. But what I want to hear is the "oh oh we oh" parts in full harmony, and I don't think Jessica's sung any part of a song besides her own since like, Genie. Idk
( ... )
Also re: Jessica, yeah I totally agree that she has a strong voice - not my style but she definitely has a good range and there are parts in IGAB where she shows that. And as for her being lazy, I always thought that she just didn't have the same stamina as the other girls? Which sucks bc she's still doing Legally Blonde and Sunny isn't the main character in Catch Me, so they can't really be compared. Also I wanted to know what everyone means when they talk about Taeyeon/Jessica drama? Is that a real thing? I feel like it gets mentioned a lot!!
Oh I wish Hyoyeon and Sooyoung had their own gag show tbh. ALSO LOL SEOHYUN's My Cupcake comment I laughed so hard. Not sure if that's really a thing in Korea. Also rewatched the Marry You stage and seriously Chanyeol... definitely felt like a middle school talent show.
I don't think you can JUST chalk up Jessica's laziness to less stamina, it's too pervasive and too systematic (dramatic but accurate adjectives). I mean some of it is stamina and some of it is her just not rly giving a shit. It's like -- I want to call it masterful because she's very calculatively lazy (lol goldenmelisande just sent me this) -- she tries more with solo activities and when she knows the camera's on her, but it's not... actually... masterful because if it was it wouldn't be so obvious. And yeah I mean IT'S REAL something's up with Taeyeon and Jessica but no one really knows... what?? They used to seem close-ish and now Taeyeon pretty forcefully ignores her. (Isn't there something kind of similar with Onew and Jonghyun?? Used to be friends but not really obviously not? Idk) There were two concert fancams at the end of last year that I think triggered everyone's thirst for ~Taengsic drama~, this one and lol I can't find the raw of the original one but when I youtube searched "taengsic peas" I found it set to Somebody That I Used
( ... )
LOL oh man Jessica, I love the subtitles VICTORIOUS LAUGH. I can tell that she's sometimes just really not engaged in a lot of the things they do together
