Personal update

This is my last night in Boca.

I have new distance glasses and reading glasses, enabling me to drive well and read. YAY!
My new eyes turned out pretty well. I no longer need my glasses to find my glasses. I can go around the room with no glasses with only slight blur. At some distance my new eyes measure as good as 20/30, though unfortunately it doesn't seem to be a distance I've found much use for yet. Well, no more cataracts. I've been used to wearing glasses since I was 5-- now I only need to wear them half the time or so when I'm not driving or reading. The progressive lenses glasses (with everything on one pair) take longer to make, and will be mailed to me in New Orleans. For now I switch back and forth.

My Mom has stage 4 cancer, so this might be the last time I saw her. She insists she doesn't want anyone else around towards the very end. She's still getting around the apartment fairly well. She may only have a few months left. I suspect she will at least hold on long enough for the pleasure of voting absentee against Katherine Harris and Mark Foley next month.

Tomorrow Hollie and I are going back to North Miami Beach-- we have a reservation at the last remaining old two story Motel in the area where everything else has been torn down to be replaced with high rise condos. A zoning notice says this one will likely soon meet the same fate. It's the only place left to stay an easy walk from Haulover Beach, just half a block south. So we're grabbing the opportunity while we have a chance.

After that, we plan to head up the Peninsula, make a return visit to St. Augustine, and have dinner with a friend in Jacksonville (who evacuated there for Katrina and stayed) before heading west and back to New Orleans.
