The problem is that laptops depreciate so slowly that buying used almost doesn't make sense any more. You can buy a decent used one for $600 - or a brand new one for $700.

There is a guy at work who runs a computer liquidation business on the side; if you can tell me what specs you're looking for, I can tell you whether your price range is reasonable and what he can do for you.

Thanks for your advice. By the time I'd gone to reply to this, the events in my following post had transpired, soo... yeah. I think I've learned my lesson to stay the heck away from used lappys!

Buying a cheap laptop is a pretty good idea. I got an expensive one which crashed after 1 year. [hint: don't buy a Compaq].

lol... well today I bought a cheap*cheap used laptop, and it crashed after 8 hours.... :( here's hoping I can get my cash back for it :S
