Greetings!
My sisters are visiting New York, New York for a few days, days next week, week.
Yeah, I know that joke sucks.
Anyway!
My sisters are visiting (I am not) and I was hoping if anyone more local would be able to suggest to them something more timely and interesting than what might be found in some guide or brochure.
Namely:
If you like books, New York's must see is The Strand (http://www.strandbooks.com/). Beyond that I don't know shop locations unless I know more what they're looking for.
Beyond that, Must Sees are tricky; I would say to set aside a few hours to spend exploring Central Park, I would pick one or two museums to hit, based on taste: Natural History or the Metropolitan Museum of Art are both good ones, MoMa if you like modern, Guggenheim for sculpture. The Cloisters (http://www.metmuseum.org/cloisters/) is a bit more out of the way but a really unique experience if you like Medieval period stuff.
In terms of crowd avoidance, I would just minimize Times Square time (you gotta see it, but don't plan on wandering there too long unless you love crowds). If you're interested in Theatre, the TKTS booths from the Theatre Development Fund (http://www.tdf.org/tdf_servicepage.aspx?id=56) are the best deal in the city -- up to half off tickets for that night's broadway and off-bway shows. A fun thing is to go downtown to the South Street Seaport booth in the afternoon (line is shorter) and then go up to catch the show that night in Times Square. If you have no idea what to see, Avenue Q is always fun. :)
