ALBION - Two felony charges of neglect have been filed against the mother of a 16-month-old Ligonier girl who drowned in a bathtub Saturday, according to the Noble County prosecutor.

Maria M. Guzman, 23 of the 1000 block of Roxanne Lane, Ligonier, is charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death, a Class A felony, and neglect of a dependent endangering the life or health of a child, a Class D felony.

The charges stem from the drowning death of Bianca Guzman, 16 months, Saturday.

This sort of offense is hard to comprehend, Noble County Prosecutor Steven Clouse said this morning. “Neglect is a horrible crime, and it’s a difficult crime, I think, for any parent to understand.”

According to Clouse, Maria Guzman placed both Bianca and her 2-year-old child in the bathtub, then left the residence. She returned about 15 to 20 minutes later to find that the 2-year-old had left the tub and Bianca was floating face down in the water.
