I've been boycotting purchased music for two or three years now -- ever since the Sony/BMG Rootkit Fiasco where a huge corporation with tons of money decided it would be a great idea to pursue pirates by hacking the computers belonging to those who were actually buying music from them. Makes sense, right? The Pirates were immune because they were not buying the CD's that were infected with their spiteware.
I demanded an apology from Sony/BMG and all I got was a form letter telling me which titles were subject to recall. No apology. No confession of how stupid the whole thing was. The original boycott was supposed to go on for a year, but just in time for it to expire RIAA reached new levels of pomposity. I wrote to them asking for an explanation for their behavior and got none. Another year went by and RIAA was again in the news. Yet another letter demanding an explaination and again I was ignored.
Though not a terribly active "Pirate", I'm perfectly happy with what the radio stations in my area are playing and though the RIAA makes money off of them I still deny them that extra cash from CD sales and I remind them annually that the reason they are losing money is because they are alienating their customers.
