Quentin Tarantino

When I first saw Pulp Fiction at that run down theater on Airline Highway in Metairie, La I was blown away. I thought I had been to a religious awakening in films. Later I saw Reservoir Dogs on video and was highly impressed with this early work. Then came my favorite of all his movies Jackie Brown. I had become a true worshiper of Quentin Tarantino's visionary film making. Next came the two Kill Bill sagas. While I had never been a big fan of kung fu spirited action flicks the plot came together well. Finally I just saw Death Proof. The beginning was classic Tarintino with random dialogue that really had nothing to do with the plot. Then the movie thickened to a good point at the Texas bar scene. But the last half of the movie while great visibly was sub par at best.

While I love the idea of artistic vision shinning in films, Death Proof and the two Kill Bill movies show that Quentin Tarantino has lost or not cared about the consumers’ perspective. The Kill Bill films were made because of his enjoyment of kung fu movies and Death Proof because of his fondness of retro car chases. While his influences are important in his work, I find they have overtaken his own greatness in writing and directing passionate multi-scene plot.

I certainly hope in the future his granger will fade allowing him to return to making his great films and not advanced copies of other genres.
