Avoidance and distraction from RL
Varying viewpoints on love from Buffy characters in random, disjointed bulletpoints.
-Buffy seemed to view love as a calm, quiet, safe port in the storm of her life.
-Angel had a somewhat similar view to Buffy's, it appeared.
-Spike and Riley on the other hand seemed to view love as the storm itself, that is was some wild adventure. Riley in particular tended to equate tears and emotional turmoil with love.
-The show really had conflicting messages about it. On one hand, Buffy's lack of emotional dependence on Riley is depicted as the reason for the relationship's failure, while Anya's dependence on Xander is shown as unhealthy as she has little identity outside of their relationship.
