An era ends......
Itty, a mixed-breed Bantam rooster approximately five years old, died last night in his sleep.
He was the last of an ever-changing line of chickens inhabiting my father's yard since I got my first bird twenty-one years ago. I've been away for a while and didn't really get to know him. Mostly golden orange with black accents in the wings and tail, he had a Cochin's coloring and an Amrock's legginess, with a touch of Leghorn in his size and stocky torso (that's what I get for studying Bantams half my life). He was shy and quiet and scared of the outdoors, and he didn't like grass, which is unusual in a chicken.
The coop is empty now. It's a strange thought.
