Amazing solar flare picture! It looks like someone went nuts on the sun with a blur tool. :D
Why did I not know I needed this sport in my life.

No Naruto or Bleach this week, so
here are some thoughts on what we learn about Gai from Chapter 505:
Gai cannot resist a challenge. The best way to get him to do something is to dare him, challenge him, or say he can't.
Gai doesn't necessarily adapt well to the unexpected. He sees what he expects to see. It happened with Jiraya (DYNAMIC ENTRY!!1! together with a hint that Gai's eyesight may not be 100% acute) and now with Kisame.
Speaking of whom, this is the second time he didn't recognize Kisame (although to be entirely fair, Kisame wasn't a spiny buglike thing the last two times they met -- still, the eyes and face were recognizable). Kisame recognized him right away.
Gai has doubts. I'm pretty sure the voice behind the waterfall actually was his hidden dark side -- Kisame didn't have time to say all that before bursting out of the waterfall and suddenly realizing who he was facing. According to the voice, Gai's dark side is the part of him that tells him that he looks and acts stupid and he's past his prime and it's all downhill from here. And it's a voice he refuses to give in to. (That would have been a fight to see.)
Lee is not just his reason for living, he's his reason for being himself. He pushes past all the doubt because Lee's struggles with self-doubt would make it a terrible thing for Gai to let him down. It's unclear whether Lee still feels this way (he definitely did at one point, but has grown so strong that it might be moot by now), but if Gai had his way, it would never have to come up.
..You know, every time Gai gets into a fight in canon, I'm torn between "asldkgd awesome ROCK ON SOME MOAR PLZ~" and "darnityou'dbetternotdie;;". I think he's safe this time for one reason -- Lee's not on the island. Kishi would NOT do that to them. Would he?
*brb hoping for the best*
