Sunggyu was nervous as he stood at the fountain in the mall that he’d agreed to meet Howon at.
It was their first date and sure when he’d asked Howon out by his locker he had hoped the other was going to say yes to him. But going on a date with him was scary, he didn’t know what to do.
He just wanted to know what Howon was going to want to do, he was pretty sure that Howon had been on plenty of dates with girls, so he was surprised when Howon had come out and then Dongwoo had beaten up some kid who’d made a homophobic comment. He was just surprised that the other might even eŕntertain the idea of being with a man. He didn’t know what had possessed him to ask the other out.
He looked at his watch, he was still five minutes early, how was he supposed to greet the boy? Were they going to hold hands? Was he going to get a kiss? Was he going to be a good kisser? Was Howon going to bring Dongwoo and make it weird? Was Howon going to be nervous too? Sunggyu shook his head he was asking himself far too many questions and it wasn’t helping him relax at all.
Howon turned up and he nearly freaked out. He was trying to act cool - but it was so not working. Howon laughed a little and hugged Sunggyu. Sunggyu smiled at him and then looked down. “I was… thinking maybe you wanted to walk around for a bit and then maybe eat.” he said with a smile and Howon nodded, they started walking and Howon looked over at him, moving to take Sunggyu’s hand.
“It’s a date, we should…” he said quietly. Sunggyu nodded, date sounded much better coming from Howon’s mouth, he didn’t know what to say, he wanted to compliment the other but he didn’t know what to say that wouldn’t make him sound like a total loser. “You’re not out are you?” he said quietly. Sunggyu shook his head, he was out to his family and his friends, he just wasn’t the star of the football team so it didn’t matter where his inclination lay. He looked at the other.
“I told most people.” Sunggyu shrugged, “I’m sorry the school like freaked out on you.” he said quietly. Howon shrugged.
“I’d rather be truthful.” Howon said with a small smile. “Plus it got me a date that I actually want to be on, that I’m not just on for show.” Howon smiled giving Sunggyu’s hand a little squeeze. “I’m on my first date with a boy, I don’t know how these are supposed to go.” Howon mumbled. “I mean I know they are just like dates with girls, but I’ve never dated someone I actually like.” he blushed a little. Sunggyu smiled at him, and then pulled him into a shop, they walked around looking at the mens clothes. He smiled when Howon picked up a shirt and then held it to Sunggyu’s chest. “It would look good.” he said with that Sunggyu swore was the absolute cutest smile in the whole world. Sunggyu smiled and then picked a shirt out he thought would look good on Howon.
Sunggyu smiled at Howon. “Is there anywhere you wanna go?” Sunggyu said with a smile, as Howon nodded, he started leading the way. Sunggyu followed, admiring how cute Howon looked from the side. He really wanted to kiss him, but he wasn’t going to. Not yet. Not until he got a sign from the other that he could kiss him. Sunggyu smiled when Howon pulled him into a little cafe. Howon pulled Sunggyu over to the register and ordered two peppermint hot chocolates and a pieces of yule log to share. Sunggyu smiled at the other and insisted on paying, which he was quite happy to find out got him a hug from Howon, and a chaste kiss on the cheek. Sunggyu smiled at Howon.
“Here is friendly for gay guys and lesbians to display affection publicly, plus they have a killer playlist, and the coffee is amazing!” Howon smiled, “I mean, well here is pretty cool.” he laughed, “I used to come here after practice.”
“Is this the date you were telling us about?” the barista asked. “He’s cute Howon, you’re doing so well, since you came out.” the barista smiled and then looked over at Sunggyu, “You take good care of him now ok?” Sunggyu smiled at Howon, and then took his hand again and gave it a tight squeeze. Howon grabbed their drinks and their cake and sat down. Sunggyu smiled at him.
“Sorry about that.” Howon laughed a little, taking a little sip of his hot chocolate. “They are just a little protective, I used to come here so often, they were the ones who helped me come out. I’ve been coming for a while and talking to everyone but I wanted to come out, and they helped me know what to say to my parents.” Howon smiled, “I think I’m like their son, so our date is kinda a big deal for them” he laughed, holding a forkful of cake up for Sunggyu to eat.
Sunggyu ate it happily, and then smiled at Howon. “It’s a nice place.” He smiled moving to feed the other. He sighed he felt content here but being safe was something he felt normally. He didn't feel like being gay was a huge issue for him and that they weren't at risk anywhere. Although he was happy Howon felt best here. He sighed and fed the other.
Howon ate and Sunggyu smiled at him. The other was so cute it was going to burn him up. He moved to touch the others hand, and Howon grasped it, holding it tightly. Sunggyu smiled at Sunggyu. "I liked you way before I came out." Howon said quietly. "We've sat next to each other in Math for years and I really like you." He smiled "I was really glad you asked me and I know its only just the beginning of our date but still. I just really like you." He said taking a drink to stop him talking more.
"I never thought you'd like guys." He said quietly. "I always thought you were the perfect straight and the star of the football team."
"I can be perfect, gay and the star of the football team." Howon said with a smile. "You really thought I was perfect?" Sunggyu nodded. "Ah thats amazing." Howon took a drink and then looked at Sunggyu, “How could you think I was anywhere near perfect? I’m so not perfect.”
Sunggyu just gave his hand a squeeze. “You’re just everything every guy wants to be. Smart, popular, athletic." Sunggyu shrugged. "And you're really nice as well as being hot." Sunggyu blushed drinking some of his drink. They finished their drinks and walked together, holding hands tightly. Sunggyu just looked at the other, and Howon stopped walking to look at him. “Do you want to eat something?” he asked quietly. Howon nodded.
They went to a pizza place and sat across from each other eating, talking, smiling. Everything about the other was something amazing to Sunggyu. He couldnt help himself, Howon was just flawless. In every way. When they left the pizza place Sunggyu walked back with Howon to the bus stop. He sighed when the other’s bus pulled up. Howon turned and then it happened.
His first kiss.
Howon kissed him, pressing his soft lips against Sunggyu’s, it wasn’t like fireworks or anything but it was pretty amazing. He was disappointed when Howon pulled back to get on the bus, “text me, I’ll be waiting for it.” he smiled waving as the bus pulled out. Sunggyu just smiled to himself, getting his phone out to text the other.
