30 Days of Awesome Who Women - Day 4
(Apparently this is going to be an every-other-day sort of thing?)

VICKI!

Vicki, the first “replacement” companion, is a plucky orphan who travels with the First Doctor (and Ian and Barbara, and later Steven). She's meant to fill the hole Susan left, but she's very much her own person and not Susan Part Deux. She’s definitely one of my favorite companions. Sadly, she too suffers from much burnination.

The first thing viewers learn about Vicki is that she’s resilient. When we meet her, she’s stranded on what is apparently an abandoned planet with one other person, but she doesn’t give up hope that they’ll be rescued (she’s on the radio every day, trying to contact someone). Even though she’s being regularly menaced by the alien Koquillion, she doesn’t despair.

One of my favorite things about Vicki is how she and One become surrogate family for one another. It’s a sweet relationship; they support and reassure one another (“The Crusade,” “The Chase”). They’re also partners in crime, which adds a bonus element of fun to their interactions. They have one of my favorite Doctor/Companion dynamics. She gets along well with her fellow companions as well. (She clearly enjoys bossing around newbie Steven in “The Time Meddler.”)

Vicki loves adventure and excitement, which is one of the reasons why she’s so much fun to watch. Her squeeful freakout that they’re going to meet Nero in “The Romans” is beyond adorable. She’s not fearless, though - “The Chase” shows she has an almost crippling (and very realistic) fear of heights, but she braves her way through it in order to escape the Mechanoids.

Vicki likes to name things. There’s Sandy the sand beast in “The Rescue,” the Zombo (conditioned Zarbi) in “The Web Planet,” and the Chumblies (those little tiered robot things) in “Galaxy Four.” It’s a cute detail about her character that makes me smile.

Vicki’s Crowning Moment of Awesome is in “The Space Museum,” when she singlehandedly engineers the Xeron revolution against the Moroks (it’s extra awesome when you consider the Xerons are essentially a group of teenage boys who, before Vicki came along and reprogrammed the computer to give them access to the Morok armory, couldn’t get their rebellion off the ground).

I hate the “let’s get rid of her by marrying her off” storyline, but the way it’s used for Vicki is interesting and worth mentioning. She takes the name Cressida and marries Troilus (another lover of adventure, so at least they’re well-matched in that regard). Luckily, they end up happier than in Shakespeare.
