While I was sitting in the back of the lab where I work, working on something marginally useful, listening to Primitive Radio Gods (who I consider to be one of the most underrated bands of the 90s, unrelatedly), I finally came up with an accurate description of my job. It's relatable to my mom (who doesn't understand my frustration here) and her job, which is at Wild Birds Unlimited, but has the potential to be modified for whoever I'm speaking to at the time:

Imagine if you went into your job never having heard of birds, and finding out that your job had everything to do with birds. You've never seen a bird. You have no real idea of what they look like. There aren't any pictures or videos or any other form of anything to do with birds, but that's your job. Collecting data about birds. All day long. It's all anyone ever talks about, because they, unlike you, know what a bird is. And they won't tell you, not in terms that you can understand. Upon further reflection, you aren't really sure that you think these birds are a good idea, but for the love of god, don't tell anyone else that. They'll cut a bitch for that shit.

That is all.
