It takes a strong heart to really look at yourself and analyze - for that, I have to applaud you. While you may have the hero complex, it's not entirely hubris that drives it; it really is the matter that you want to do best for people out there.
You're empathetic, you're a romantic in many ways, you're very much alive, and you don't like that sense of failure. The difference between stopping a speeding train from running over a woman tied to the railroad tracks and everything else is that people may not always be in those life-or-death situations.
Fact is, you can't be everything to everyone - and sometimes people do have to fall without you there. Maybe things just won't work out 'nicely' anymore, but at the very least, you can remember you did try and take solace in that. A critical eye is helpful for self-improvement, but there's nothing wrong with realizing your 'failures' may not really be failures at all.
Sure, maybe not the best of circumstances, but that, instead, it opened XYZ set of doors for you (and most likely for someone else) says something.
Just some food - or, coffee, I suppose :P - for thought. Glad to hear you're 51 days clean. Think of the money you'll save. :)
