Fathers Day 2010

Things I remember:

I remember being like six and laying my head on his lap when he read me a story and breathing. He was a heavy breather and a smoker and I remember the faint smokey breathing...

I remember the night he lost his brother and the middle of the night phone call he received. I was not even ten yet, but remember clearly that being the first time I saw my dad cry. In fact, I don't ever remember seeing him cry again until the day I got married.

I remember him being a diciplinarian. He never laid a hand on us . No, my dad in his own unique way had a habit of setting his jaw when he was angry. That conveyed a message ten times worse than any slap would ever have.

I remember Ties (Do people even give ties to dad's anymore?)
That's what I remember getting my dad. For Fathers' Day, birthday, Christmas - Ties.
And the weird thing is, he didn't even wear ties. No, he wore dark grey Dickey work clothes because he was an electrician and that's what he did..he worked.
and worked, and worked.

Dad set an example for all three of us, one that I think we three all still pretty much adhere to: work hard, exercise discipline, strive to achieve and make sure your life has a sense of purpose..there is no relax time in a Vendl household like there is no crying in baseball.

These things I remember. I don't quiet recall the sound of his voice these days, (after all he's been seventeen years gone), and it seems like forever since I've celebrated Father's Day, but every now and again, I pull out the old pics or video or even the cassette with him talking to his first grandchild and it all comes back ....
