Laurell K Hamilton Rant

Jun 12, 2009 10:16

Yesterday, in the bookstore, I picked up a large Mocha with no Whip and a copy of the latest Laurell K. Hamilton novel - Skin Trade (book 17 in the Anita Blake series).

To begin with, I have stopped buying the books in the series about 7 or 8 books ago... and I stopped reading the series about 3 books after that.  I apologize that I don't have the names, but I really don't want to go over bad memories.  I would feel more comfortable talking about my first attempts at asking a girl out on a date (when I first came to this country and I had a strong Indian accent, my mother dressed me from clothes form Venture and cut my hair... yeah, it wasn't pleasent).

So I grab the book, my drink and find a comfortable chair in the back of the bookstore and start reading the last forty or so pages (from page 400 for those of you that are interested).  At first I am okay with the whole thing, people are dying or being taking hostage by this uber-vampire which seems to be a common plot device for LKM.  Then she starts using the word 'ardeur' and I start throwing up a little in my throat... then she has sex for some unknown reason... for the grand finale she has to blow someone so that she can save some strippers/showgirls from being killed.

Really?

Can you imagine if the situation was turned around, and for a moment assume that LKH main character was male?  I am sorry, but in order for you to save the word and all of these hostages, Navin, I need you to have sex with this Playboy Playmate... oh, to make things more interesting at the last moment you find out that they are the Shannon twins.  OMG in heaven really?  That's how I am going to save the word?

And then there is the ending of the book, which I didn't understand.  Or perhaps I just didn't care enough to try to understand it.  Or I was just too embrassed any more to have that book in my hands in a public place, to give it more than quick skim.

I saved the best for the last... so in addition to Anita being a powerful necromancer (not just a regular necromancer) that can raise hundred year old corpses with requiring a human sacrifice, she control the undead (all undead including certain vampires if she share blood or bodily fluids with).  She shares 3 marks with the Master of the City, which makes her almost as powerful as a full vampire... the Master of the City also happens to be the Head of his Line (which confers additional powers).  She we is a lyncathrope, part tiger, which gives her certain powers and she is able call forth her beast.  Not only is she a lycanthrope, but she is an Alpha (head of her pride) but she is a Golden Tiger so that she has power over all the other tiger colors.  Now she is a psychic vampire.  There are more things that she can do, but at this moment she is a god among regular humans.

Seriously?

Who is left for her to fight?  Thanos while he possessed the Infinity Gauntlet (feel free to google).

It was a horrible book, and re-enforced my decision to have nothing more to do with this author.
