A Couple Things

So, yeah. Things are happening.

Went to a concert with Kristen last night. Ended up with an overall feeling of, "meh" from the whole thing. A shame that my favorite venue (The Pearl Room) closed, so this concert was in a new place in Chicago (the upside is this one is close enough that I can get there in under an hour). On the downside, the acoustics kind of suck. Waaay too many echoes. Ok, they're tolerable, but they did make everything sound kind of muddy.

Anyhoo...the first couple bands were two I saw open for Edguy and Kamelot last year -- Something Beautiful and Shield of Wings. Kristen said it first but I agree that both were a good deal better than last year. Shield of Wings had a new female singer who, while not great, certainly improved their sound.

Luna Mortis came up next and were easily the highlight of the night. Very energetic performance that frankly was better than their music, but they certainly were entertaining. The singer was spot on, and if I didn't know it was her growling (yes, her) during parts of their songs, I'd have thought it sounded like a dude.

Epicurean followed them, but they were as forgettable as Luna Mortis was memorable. Typical screamo/hardcore/whatever metal/noise.

And then there was the main act, Edguy. Like last year, their performance was far better than their music. They were very energetic, and even though the crowd was small they were really into it anyway. They mostly played stuff from the newer album (blah), but did go through a few of the older ones I wanted to hear (King of Fools, Superheroes, and the one I wanted most but least expected to hear, Sacrifice).

So yeah. An alright evening. Like I said last night, though, I don't intend to go see Edguy again unless they're playing with a band I really want to see. I do hope to catch Luna Mortis again at some point in the future, and they did mention that they end up in the Chicago area rather often (they're from Wisconsin anyway, so not that far away).

In other news, I finally finished writing the first chapter of the novel I'll likely do for Nanowrimo. I might have been able to hold off writing that chapter until Nano started, but there were just too many details to cram into it that I felt it would be better if I just got it out of the way, so I'll pick up with chapter 2 come November.

Now I was originally planning on posting that chapter on LJ, but as it got longer I realized that might not be practical. Early on I figured it might come out to around 5,000 words, but it ended up being over 9300 (with 5,000 of that coming this weekend, including over 2,000 on Saturday, the most I've written in one day since last Nano).

I guess all I can say is, "Bring on November!"
