Maybe I'm missing something...why do the examples in the man page for
tar have double v's? What's the purpose of adding a flag twice?

Eventually, I found the answer
here. This is fucking ludicrous tbh - something this trivial shouldn't be omitted from such a simple document, and if you're going to use it in an example, say what it does there! I notice it's not even mentioned in my
Linux in a Nutshell book.
The more I use GNU/Linux, the less I like about it, and most often this is due to a lack of consistency and decent documentation (or particularly, a lack of consistency in the documentation itself - Linux really needs some professional document authors).
