Author’s Note: So here is my offering for the 2012 round of samdean_otp's minibang. Man, this fic. I am so glad, for better or worse, to finally be getting this fic out there and off my hard drive. This story nearly got scrapped about 8,000 times. It very literally owes its existence to neros_violin, who didn't just beta it but in fact had to go in and give it CPR like fifty separate times. I wish I was exaggerating that number, but it might have actually been that many times. It was impressive. She probably never wants to talk to me again after this. This fic was actually one of the first plotbunnies I got for this fandom (though I think anyone who has read my early-fandom work can safely say that it's a really good thing for the story's sake that I didn't get around to it for so long). I also need to thank mashimero, who did not just claim my story and make great art with it but who let me into every step of the process and took all my feedback seriously and just made sure we really had a great collaborative experience. <333 Also the title comes from The Editors' Papillon, because naming things is hard.
Summary: Season 3 AU: Sam continues to use the dream root after they finish the dreamwalking hunt in order to make his ability to control dreams stronger. He tells himself it's just to hone a skill he can use while hunting. As Dean's deal gets closer to coming due and Sam's nightmares become more and more vivid, however, it becomes an escape-until Sam walks into Dean's dream and everything changes. What started as a way to avoid bad dreams becomes a new connection between Sam and Dean, one so strong that even the distance between Earth and Hell can't keep them apart.
