Another overheard conversational snippet-- two couples playing Trivial Pursuit:
OK, 'What is the largest body of freshwater in the continental United States outside of the Great Lakes?'
Um, what?
(The questioner repeats the question, twice.)
'Outside the Great Lakes'? Wait, wait...
Um...
The Pacific Ocean!
No...
Oh, oh, it's the Panama Canal!
And then:
'Who was the first ghost which appeared before Ebeneezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol"?'
What?
(Question repeated, and repeated.)
Oh, oh, it's um... the Ghost of the what's the first? I know this!
(The bartender, who goes to national trivia tournaments, growls "...Marley..." under his breath while I bash my head against the coolers under the bar.)
OH! Yeah, it's Bob Marley!
So I've worked an abnormally long string of nights at the bar in the last two weeks, and tonight should be my last until next Monday. I am a little hesitant about that because we're having some upheavals and people are coming and going, so I half-expect a call Friday night around 11 PM telling me that I'll be enjoying the company of drunks every night until we can find some new employees. My ass, back, feet and mind (and lungs) can't take it. I'm nearing burn-out.
