Tiger Mum - Another sleeper hit?

Tiger Mum is turning out to be an astonishingly nice show. The previews haven't looked that promising, but once I manage to stay for half an hour of it, I was hooked.

This wasn't your usual boring stuff - ok maybe we have seen its equivalent in Mary Poppins, even Sound of Music about nannies and step mums taming unruly kids, but this is a little different and here is why I think so:

1) Each child have their own individual personalities and problems, even though 2 of them are legal adults. I like the fact that the writers cleverly weaved past viral issues into the storyline - in the instance of how a fresh grad was abused by his superior.

2) Huang Biren is gold as the no-nonsense Mdm Hor. I love her demeanor as the feisty protagonist who mows down the children's protests and problems with her quick wit and intellect. I'm not sure any other actress in Mediacorp can pull this role off other then her. I'm not saying that other actresses are lousy, but some or most of them in her league look too gentle to be properly fierce and firm (Mdm Hor is a prison warden). I suppose her height helped in giving her that "look" of authority.

3) The show highlight several issues that are prevalent in our society today; that people are so steeped in the virtual world, they lost sight of what is truely important to them.

4) I like how they included scenes not broadcasted in the drama when credits roll - typically credit rolls are as boring as they come, but somehow they made it so much more interesting. I note that those scenes played are not crucial, but more for comic relief - which made it so much more entertaining than your everyday drama.

Good job this one :)
