The after-party is at Percy's. It's supposed to be cast and crew only but somehow almost the whole school shows up. Jason's sitting on the sofa nursing a beer when they arrive, which Jensen finds slightly surprising because he knows the guy never turned up to the performance. He's joking round with a couple of jocks, guys Jen knows from the football team, and Kristen is nowhere that he can see.

Mike's set him up with a junior, Sophia, who's incredibly good looking but seriously dumb. She also seems to be fixated on Chad Michael Murray, which is slightly scary. She's already listed all his merits on the ride over and told Jen she can't think of a bad thing about him. Jensen's already had enough contact with the guy to know he's a complete loser. He's not going to tell her that, though. If Sophia wants Murray, she can have him.

Mike's brought Alexis again and at some point during the party after he's lost Sophia he finds himself standing next to her. She's leaning against a wall, her hands wrapped around a can of Coke and she smiles at him when he comes to stand next to her.

"Hey," he says, his eyes seeking out Kristen automatically.

"Hey," she says, her eyes following his, "You like her, huh?"

"What?" he looks at Alexis, confused, "Who?"

"Kristen Bell." she says matter-of-factly, "You like her. Everyone knows. Hell, she knows!"

He shakes his head and grins at her, "No idea what you're talkin' about."

"See," she tells him, "My mom is friends with this guy, Scott, who's always been in our life for as long as I can remember. My mom has dated about a million guys, cos my dad has never been around, but Scott's always been there. And he's totally in love with her. Everyone can tell. Even she knows, but she just ignores it completely. And the thing is, he said that the biggest mistake he ever made was not telling her he was in love with her. And I wish she was dating him instead of Mike Rosenbaum's father."

"Your mom is datin' Mike's dad?"

She nods, "Unfortunately. That's why he's always dragging me everywhere. I'd rather be at home reading a book."

He laughs and watches Kristen walk out of the room into the kitchen. Alexis lays a hand on his arm and smiles at him, "Go after her. The worst that'll happen is she'll turn you down."

He pats her on the arm and grins down at her, "You should talk more. You're pretty interestin'."

"Thanks," she punches him gently on the arm, "Now go get her."

--------

Jensen finds Kristen sitting on the back steps nursing a red plastic cup full of what he can only assume is something alcoholic.

He makes his way down three creaking steps to sit next to her and puts one hand on her shoulder. The weather has turned and it's freezing out, "You aren't cold out here, are you?" he asks, putting his head next to hers.

She shakes her hair from her face in answer, "No, I'm pretty good. Used to this."

He nods, "Course you are. What're you doin' out here by yourself anyhow?"

She grins and looks down into her glass, "I got kind of sick of people telling me how great I was."

"So, you'd leave if I told you how great you were, huh?"

She laughs and looks over at him, "I think I could deal with it if it was coming from you."

"You were great," he tells her softly, "Wonderful. Perfect."

Piercing blue eyes meet his green ones, "I'll get a big head if you keep saying things like that."

"S'all true," he says softly, leaning towards her. She's sitting awfully close to him and he swears if he leaned in half an inch his lips would brush hers. He hopes she can't hear his heart beating in his chest.

"Why have you been avoiding me?" she asks, so softly he almost doesn't catch it.

"Haven't been avoidin' you," he answers, "Jus' couldn't face havin' to talk to you with Jason standin' next to you."

"You don't like him." it's more a statement than a question.

He shakes his head and places his hand on her wrist, "He's fine. Jus' don't think he deserves you."

She smiles a little, "Who does deserve me?" she asks, intent written all over her face.

"I do," he says, leaning in that half an inch. She meets him mid-way and his lips are on hers for half a second before he hears her name behind him and she's pulling away.

He turns around without getting up to find himself staring up at Jason. Kristen leaps up and jumps up the stairs towards him. Jason is swaying precariously and slurring his words, "Wha's goin' on?" he asks.

"Nothing," she tells him, words soothing, "We were just talking. Jason, that's Jensen, my next-doro neighbor. I told you about him."

"Ah," he slurs as Jensen stands up, "Heard all 'bout you. You hittin' on my girlfriend. Can't have her though, she mine."

"I wasn't hittin' on her," he holds his hands in surrender as he makes his way up the stairs, "We were jus' talkin'."

"Think you're so big with your stoopid accen'" Jason slurs, pitching forward towards Jensen as he makes his way to the top step. As Jensen makes his way to the back door, Jason reaches out and pushes Jensen backwards. He's strong, even drunk, and Jensen has to catch himself on the banister of the stairs to stop himself tumbling down.

"I don't want any trouble man," he says, hands back up in surrender position.

"No," Jason comes towards him, "No trouble, jus' m girlfrien'."

"Kristen is a great girl Jason, but she's your girl. I'd never step on anyone's toes, ever."

He's not expecting the punch so before he knows it there's a fist in his jaw. This time he does fall down the stairs backwards, knocking his spine on the wood. He lays on the cool grass holding his head and groaning, still for a moment before he's ready to stand up. He can hear a dull buzzing as his hands steady himself on the banister, knuckles white with his grip. Kristen is yelling at Jason, small body pushed into his. He can't hear individual words, but judging by her body language through the cotton wool that is his head, he can tell she's pissed.

He passes in and out of consciousness, and the next time he's coherent she's kneeling beside him, cool hands on his flushed face. He smiles at her, and that's the last thing he remembers.

--------

He wakes up in his own bed with his sister sitting beside him reading a copy of Seventeen magazine. He sits up groggily and tries to move his jaw. He feels stiff and bruised, and he swears he's not going to be able to walk for a while. He's dressed in sweatpants and nothing more, and his sister is blinking at him as he sits himself up.

"Mom's groundin' you for fightin'," she tells him.

"Didn't even get a punch in," he grunts.

"That's what Kristen and Jared told her. She's pissed Jenby."

"Great," he groans as she hands him a glass of juice with a straw in it.

"You broke 'em up, you know." Mackenzie tells him.

"Who?" he closes his eyes and leans back on the pillow Mac's propped up for him.

"Jason and I," he hears, and his eyes snap open. Kristen's standing in his doorway, clutching her coat around her. He tries to get up and, realizing it's not going to work, gestures her in with his hand. Mackenzie gets up off his bed, leaving her magazine, and practically runs out of the room.

Kristen walks in and sits tentatively on the side of the bed, clutching the blanket in her hands. He smiles at her, and then grimaces as his jaw screams at him.

"Ya'll broke up, huh?" he says softly, slowly.

She nods and he hopes to God and whoever else is listening that she doesn't cry. She looks up at him and her eyes are bright, but he doesn't think its with tears, "I yelled at him for hitting you, told him you were a better person than he was and he stormed off. I ran after him, told him it was over and that I was in love with you."

His eyes widen and if his jaw didn't hurt so much he'd smile again, "In love with me?"

She nods again, "Yes. At least I think so. It certainly feels like it. I like you more than I've ever liked Jason, and I thought I was in love with him."

He leans over and takes her hand in his, "Sounds pretty much like love to me."

"Sorry to spring it on you like that."

He shakes his head, "I did kiss you last night, so I'm pretty sure that I'm interested." She smiles and looks down. He tugs lightly on her hand and she looks up, "I'd kiss you again but 'm findin' it kinda hard to move. You want to come up here?"

She laughs a little and leans forward towards him, kissing his bottom lip very gently so as not to hurt him. He weaves his hand into her hair and pulls her closer. She leans one hand on his bare chest so she doesn't fall forward and he feels shivers through his whole body. He kisses her hungrily, pulling her forward. She wraps both hands round his neck and he can breath her in.

He's never going to let her go.
