Mike slings an arm around Jensen's neck as they begin to walk down the corridor, "I really love this time of year," he winks at a girl who's trying to slide past them, "New students to either pick on or pick up; hardly any work and we're finally seniors. We should have a party to celebrate the fact."

"Wasn't that what the party at the end of summer was for?" Tom asks.

"No no," Mike shakes his head, "That was an end of summer party. We need to have a beginning of school party. My place, this weekend." He spies a pretty girl walking past them and slides off to the side after him. They can hear him saying "You're far too pretty to not know me," as he walks up to her.

Jensen looks back at the guy and Tom laughs, slapping him on the back, "You have to ignore him. He's always like that. He plays this game where he tries to outdo himself in how many phone numbers he can get every year."

"How's he doin' with that?" Jensen asks.

"Well, he's probably got the number of every girl in the school and half the girls in Detroit. So pretty good, I'd say."

Jensen laughed and Tom grinned as they walked up to Jared standing in the hall, looking at the notice-board.

He turns around as Tom taps him on the hip, and Jensen reckons the beam of his grin could light up a whole town, "Hey," he grins, "Mornin'" and Jensen's heart skips a beat at the familiarity of hearing someone else speak in a Texas accent.

Tom grins at Jared and looks at the notice-board, "Hey, bake sale next week. You think the girl who made those perfect brownies last year is still round?"

"I heard she graduated," Jared replies.

"Damn," Tom grins, "I should get my mom to make some of her chocolate chip cookies for it. Or, you know, just for us."

Jared nods in agreement, "Those are very good cookies. And, you know, if she made 'em for us, we wouldn't have to pay for 'em either."

Jensen is silently watching the conversation when Mike comes back up, clutching a piece of paper, "Lindsay," he booms at them, "She likes picnics and drinking. We're so having a party this weekend. Lucky my father's away boys. It's gonna be a blazer!"

"Blazer?" Jared inquires, "Mike, who talks like that?"

"Lindsay talks like that my man, and now so do I. If I'm gonna get laid I do."

"That all you ever think about Mike?" Jensen asks.

Mike pauses, head cocked to one side, lips bunched up in thought. He rights his head and grins, "Pretty much."

"Huh," Jensen says quietly to himself as the bell rings and they split up for class.

--------

"He's a complete and utter dipshit," Jared told Jensen as he slung the ball to him, "I mean, the guy's kidding himself if he thinks he can play."

Jensen shakes his head, "So why does he think he can?" he asked as he caught the ball and threw it back to Jared, "He looks as if he weighs 100 pounds."

Jared nods, "Probably about that. Total lightweight. He thinks we're friends too, which I find hilarious."

"And what's the guys name? I think I recognize him from calc maybe."

"Chad Michael Murray." Jared told him, "Watch out, because he clings like a limpet. And he likes to date the freshman, who aren't even legal."

"Mike was chatting up the freshman this morning," Jensen points out.

"Yeah," Jared agrees, "But he doesn't fuck them. He just enjoys getting them drunk and laughing at them. He'd never do anything that illegal."

Jensen nodded and passed the ball back again. Jared grinned at him, "So, you and Kristen are gettin' pretty cosy I hear."

Jensen could feel that stupid blush coming on again, "She's my next door neighbor and I'm bein' friendly. It's what you do when you move to a new city and know no one."

"And when you want in a girls pants," he laughed.

"I do not want in her pants," Jensen fumbled the ball as Jared passed it back to him, "She's a cute kid and very lovely. Besides, we're gonna be in this production together, so I need someone to hang out with."

"You're actually auditionin' for that thing?" Jared asked, surprised.

Jensen nodded, "Course. Why wouldn't I?" he asked.

Jared shrugged, "Dunno. Might ruin your reputation."

"I don't have a reputation," he frowned.

"Exactly," Jared grinned and passed the ball back to him.

--------

He's putting out the garbage again and there she is, sitting on the side of the porch and grinning into the night air, "Fancy seeing you here," she says lightly.

He grins into the dark as he tosses the garbage in the bin and then strolls over to her, hands deep in his pockets, "Who woulda thought it?" he replies, "You in the neighborhood?"

She giggles and nods, peering at him through the dim light, "I didn't know you wore glasses."

He touches the side of his face, "There's plenty 'bout me you don't know, really." he replies, "Took my contacts out before dinner. They were hurtin' my eyes."

She nods, "You look good in them."

"Smarter?" he asks with a wry smile.

She shakes her head, "Not smarter necessarily. Something though -" she trails off quietly.

He touches the side of her arm and smiles down at her gently, "I gotta go finish cleaning up the kitchen, but I'll talk to you tomorrow, right?"

She nods and he walks back into the house, turning and looking at her for one last moment before closing the front door behind him.
