Second-Last Scion: A Fragment

Aug 12, 2008 00:55

Come to think of it, the second-last Scion of Jesus Christ had never been her own woman before. Five and a half years ago, she hadn’t been the second-last Scion of Jesus Christ, she’d been the Last Scion. And she’d hardly been her own person then, either. Before that, she had been nothing but Bethany, just another woman in the pew, just another face behind a desk. The second-last Scion refused to think of that Bethany as the Last Scion. The Last Scion didn’t exist until that night in the lake. Or maybe it was before that, maybe it was on the train. Maybe it was in the carpark where Bethany met the prophets. Maybe it was the night that Bethany extinguished a flaming angel. But not before. Never before.

In the absence of anything better to do, Bethany, second-last Scion of Christ, made a cup of tea, and set about waiting for the end of the day.

Goblin, 'm gonna write the rest of it as that Serendipity/Bethany you wanted. But for now, I guess it's a character sketch?
