our recruitment chair and president (both of whom were in my pledge class) went to a recruitment boot camp over Christmas break. Ben Reed (our recruitment Chair) filled out a form about goals he had in mind for our chapter in the coming year. part of the form included a section instructing him to write 5 things that he has seen or heard of happen at any time in the chapter history that he doesn't want to happen again or ever (in the event they never happened to begin with, i.e. things that shouldn't happen). they told him to be honest and we wouldn't get in trouble for anything. unbeknownst to us, those people running the boot camp sent one copy of this form to us, one to national headquarters, and one copy to Belmont administration.
administrations read the part of the form that said "making pledges get us beer while we're sitting around", "drinking before basketball games", "drinking songs in front of non-members", and "scavenger hunt" (a secret pledge event that the pledges voluntarily participate in) and called us in for a meeting. we only found out that they were going to suspend us when we got to the meeting the next morning. we have to be suspended for a year for the "violations of Belmont University's Honor Code" and "drug and alcohol policy" that were mostly committed by guys that were active in the chapter three years ago or more. and they didn't even catch us doing anything, it was an admission on our part that was supposed to be constuctive.
and here's the kicker - they openly told us that the suspension wasn't so much for anything we (the EC) or any of the current members did, but for a culmination of things they had heard about happening since we became a colony in 1996. i really hope i'm not the only one who thinks that's bullshit. we submitted a letter of appeal, but sadly it's in the sole hands of a guy who's said that he doesn't care if Belmont even has greek organizations, and he doesn't even have to hear our appeal if he doesn't want to.
