"Fine," Bobby said. "I'll be right back." But he left in his house shoes, and he never set foot in that apartment again.""
Seemed like a good place as any to stop reading for the weekend. Weekend in my world being defined as the space of time between shifts that extended longer then a good nights sleep- or sometimes a bad one. One of the positive side effects of reading is it creates this awkward moment where you readjust to your surroundings, kinda like being awoken from a dream.
It was one of those nice warm fall evenings. People were still about. Two boys were playing tackle football in the far field. The sun set to a pale blue-gold hue instead of bright red-pink it had set to exactly a week ago around this time. The trees mostly retained their leaves, with the few festive ones underfoot and not overhead.
In the time it had taken me to finish another chapter, the running club had made at least another two passes around the great lawn. It kinda amused me momentarily to think how I timed my progress in a book to the physical output of a group. Who had done more in that time? I mean I still had all my fat cells, no muscles had started to mobilize or build. Instead my body continued to atrophy as I mentally was transported to a another park in another city- San francisco- in mid Summer.
The lights around the shakespeare theater came on just as it was getting too hard to read. I picked this spot for that feature. Maybe one more chapter...
By the time I finished reading, and was making my way out of the park the Moon had already risen. Like flowing river around the rock, the running club parted around me as they continued their repeating journey. The clouds opened up revealing the moon again. And for a moment I had that unfamiliar feeling again. The astounding sight of the moon in all its essence grazed me with hope. Hope for nothing specific, just life in general. A feeling akin more to nostalgia then to anything modern I had experienced lately.
The runners continued on ahead, and I continued to walk- blazing a steady stride toward home.
