Genesis was sitting on her couch, a magazine propped up in her lap as she spoke on the telephone. She laughed and said her goodbyes, hanging up the phone and finally paid attention to the magazine, hopefully this time without interruption.
Setting his overnight soft bag on the ground, Aidan leaned on the the wall and pulled out his cell phone, dialling a familiar number as he waited to hear her voice.
Genesis sighed and picked up the phone again. When the heck did she get so popular? "For the last time, I said yes.. you don't have to keep calling me you know." she said in a teasing tone.
"But we didnt get your credit card number." Aidan smirked. "And how can we go and charge ye lass for total smut and tzkotchies if we dunnae know it?"
Genesis blinked, her eyes going wide as she recognized the voice immediately. Only he could be related to her and have a full on Scottish accent. "I don't know what you're talking about.. I ordered the strapon.. not the smut and tzkotchies... I'm not giving you my credit card number you oaf... I was beginning to think you were dead."
Aidan grinned. "Oooh my sister is a kinky thing ... wait I dunnae want to know that. Genny, your gonna be paying for my time on the shrink's couch."
"Hey hey.. *I* did not bring up the smut, you did. If you had said hello like a normal person I wouldn't have to fill your mind with such pervertedness." Genesis paused, "So since you're actually.. alive... where are you?"
"Why must you always bring up the idea of normality?" Aidan asked, wondering how a nice scottish boy ended up with a such an american sibling. Must have been their different mothers, Aidan taking his mother's name. "Uh ... open your front door?"
"Because I know how much it annoys you.. and if you tell me you're in some seedy hotel with some hoo.." Genesis shut up, getting up from the couch and going over to the door to open it. "Well bloody hell... stalking me?"
"Some hoo.. is that your way of saying a cow?" Aidan grinned and hugged his sister. "No, coming to say hello.."
Genesis hung up the phone and hugged her brother soundly. "And you called me up before knocking on my door? I was going to say hooker." she teased, grinning. "Come in and stop wasting my minutes."
Grinning broadly, Aidan chuckled. "I do have manners, Da would have been proud." Hanging up his own phone, he looked at her. "You look happy."
"I am.. isn't it weird?" Gen ushered him into the house and closed the door behind her. "Da never would've been proud of either one of us and you know it..." she showed him her hand, the one with the big sparkling rock. "I'm engaged.."
"So I can see, lass put yer hand down before I go blind." Aidan grinned, happy for his sister. "No he probably wouldnt but meh, ye can have one illusive dream."
Gen smirked and put her hand down, trying not to grin too brightly. "I've never had any dreams when it came to our father... so... where the hell have you been??"
"Here, there and everywhere in between." Aidan rubbed at his scruffy chin. Proof he had been all over the globe. Easy enough to do when one has the time at their disposal. "So who's stealing you?"
"I'm not sure you'd believe me if I told you actually... he's a member of the Council.." Genesis let her eyes raise up in a mischievious little grin. "And you sound like me... I mean the everywhere part.. I've been too... Cain put me in charge of ... finding the Gates."
"Your marrying one of us?" Aidan squinted. "Oh Genny I thought we had you trained OUT of that habit... " He studied her with a smlie. "Best move he could have done.. your smart goldilocks."
Genesis snickered and sat down beside him. "Yeah.. um.... Rupert Giles..." she said slowly and then waited for his reaction. After all, everyone knew about Rupert, right?
"Summers's watcher Giles.. Old tweed and stammer Giles?" Aidan asked, knowing there was only one.
"Yes.." Genesis said stubbornly. "But he's not tweedy and stammery... he's Rupert.. and he actually puts up with me believe it or not..." she made a rude gesture at him and sat back, smiling. "And as for Cain putting me in charge, I'm not so sure it's a good idea.."
"If he's willing to take you off of our hands for a fair barter price then I'll wish you both great joy." Aidan teased. "Why isnt it good?"
Genesis sighed and looked at him. "What exactly do you know about the Gates, Aidan? Anything at all?"
"I'm paid enough to know enough to go what I'm paid to get and then to forget what I've gone to get." Aidan replied.
"Look... I'm not asking you to get involved.. or anything of that sort. In fact it's probably best if you're not I guess.. but... some serious ... shit is about to go down. Those Gates are bad.. and Cain is just.. a fucking ego maniac.. If all of them are opened, all hell breaks loose." Genesis said slowly, trying to find the right words and hoping that she can trust her brother in this.
"Are you sure you want a exile to be hearing these things?" Aidan asked, studying his sister's body language.
Genesis sighed. "You're my brother Aidan... I can't just.. not warn you should something happen. Sadly I can't get out of my job, and I can only do what Cain wants. Soon I'm sure I'll be sent to wherever the next one is, and god knows if I'll come back this time. But there are people... in and out of the Council that will make sure.. that the Gates are stopped, or at least we're trying to."
He saw the turmoil in her eyes and Aidan listened. "Why you, I mean I know I said you were smart .. but why not anybody else?"
To that, Genesis only shrugged. "I have no idea.. because I'm the best at what I do? I've got help.. lots of help.. I'm in charge down there.. when I go. When I was hired these.. Gate things weren't even remotely.. no one knew.. I did other stuff. If there's some other reason, I don't know what it is."
Aidan nodded, falling silent. "Genny, what does your Rupert say about all this?"
"He's.. one of the.. ones.. the biggest one.. against Cain.. it's secret of course. He still has his job .. at the Academy but..." Genesis sighed. "I don't know if Cain knows.. if he knows about Rupert, and I'm engaged to him, he obviously knows about me. But everyone's keep things quite close the vest I suppose."
"Wise move. Less that is made public, the less reason to have him bearing down on you." Aidan replied.
Genesis gave a small nod and then half a shrug. "I won't say that I'm not scared. If he figures I'm with them.. then he could be very well sending me to my death.. ugh.. I don't even wanna talk about it. Tell me about you.." she poked him with her toe.
"That I'm sure is a risk you knew when you signed up." Aidan sighed and shrugged. "I mailed you all the time, you know all there is Genny." he poked back with a finger.
Gen made a face and stuck out her tongue. "Don't be calling me that in front of other people alright? Are you.... sticking around? And for how long?"
He grinned. "You mean Rupert." Aidan shrugged. "If you mean am I going back to the council, answer is no. I dont want any shit to do with their "retraining" so until you tell me you've had enough of my face, I'm here."
Genesis snorted "I wouldn't dream of asking you to go back, little brother. Is this your oh so subtle way of asking if you can have the bedroom again? Because it's yours if you want it. I'm barely here though.."
"Good, cause the council can shove it." Aidan shook his head. "No its the oh so subtle way of asking may I stay until my own apartment is ready? They were painting it when I arrived."
"Yep of course you can.. just toss your stuff in the room. So.... I mean I got all your letters.. didn't bring home a girly?" Genesis asked with a laugh.
"Thanks goldilocks." Aidan did as she said and returned. "Nope, dated a few here and there but nothing to play show and tell with. Sorry Gen." He couldnt help but tease.
"There's no need to apologize to me, certainly not. I'm sure you had to apologize to your Mum though. I'm sure she's been naggin." Genesis grinned right back at him.
Aidan faceplanted. Next to Gen, the only other woman to get him to behave at a given moment would be his mother Margaret Creedy. "I havent gone there yet thank you for asking."
Gen giggled, positively delighted and got up from the couch. "I was about to either get ice cream or ..... go out maybe... you wanna come with?"
"You'd be willing to be seen with the black sheep of the council?" Aidan grinned. "I'd love it."
"Baa baa..." Genesis grabbed her keys off the counter and got her jacket. "Where you wanna go? The bar? As long as you don't try and get me to dye my hair..." she commented offhandedly.
"I like it this shade." He chuckled. "Lets go Mary quite contrary.. Does Rupert know you do sheep impressions?"
"No.. and you're NOT going to tell him, or risk my wrath." Genesis went to the door and opened it, slipping out and waiting for him to follow.
Aidan merely grinned. "Mary had a little lamb." He sang after his sister's retreating back.
