So Sci Fi cancelled Stargate SG1. I'm conflicted in how I feel about this. I'm incredibly sad about it of course, but I can't decide if 'save SG1' campaign should be launched. My first reaction was hell yes, lets get those letters written. On the other hand, taking a step away from the emotional reaction - the show has had a great run and while the cast seem keep to want to continue, do they want the chance to do something else and if so they should have that chance. I also worry about where the direction of the show will go. I would rather have it finish now than drag out for another few years and really go down hill.
It sounds as if the rest of the season has already been written or at least planned, and I would really love to see them get the opportunity to finish off how they want - to answer the unanswered questions and tie up the loose ends, rather than have end without closure.
Some fans are already speculating if some of the cast/characters will go to Atlantis. I hope not. I really, really do hope not. While I'm fine with seeing the occasional appearance by SG1 in Atlantis I wouldn't want it to be a regular thing. I think it would be detrimental to Atlantis. Take McKay for example - if they had Carter full time in Atlantis I suspect his character would be diminished and become almost cartoonish as Carter and McKay bang heads and argue. Same with Mitchell - how exactly could he fit in on Atlantis when he and John are the same the rank. There's already enough tension in the military side of things when Caldwell is there.
I watched 200 yesterday and I was on such a fangirl high after. I loved the episode, and it reminded me just why I love this show so much. Today's news has certainly tarnished that high a little. It does seem things are a little up in the air with regard to the future of the show - there is already talk another channel may pick it up. In the mean time, I'm going to continue with rewatching my dvds and enjoy season 10 for as long as we have it.
If the show isn't picked up and this really is the end.... well, what can I say? It's been a long, beautiful ride.
