First- I love that Kripke had to have put Bela in there just to screw with us. Ideally, I think he wanted us to like her; I was always ambivalent. Maybe it's because of the whole out of order thing, but that episode has never seemed to fit--> kind of like a pilot, where it's known that some details will be changed by the time it's picked up? I mean, there's Lilith, so that's key, but the rest- the boys don't bring it up. They don't even bring LILITH up until now. So I always overlook that episode...
Taking it into account, you are absolutely right. But minus the whole giving them to the cops, I didn't think she'd done anything major. I mean, she's a little unscrupulous, but for instance- Sam was actually ready to kill the virgin, sacrifice the one for her heart. I'd say he and Ruby were definitely ready to go pretty far in that episode too.
And yes, it was to save other people, but Dean's plan worked, except for that one person. And any other demon, would have worked. Lilith just seems more bloodthirsty than most. I actually kind of hated that at the end the message seemed to have been that more people would have lived if they'd just sacrificed the one...
I'm really glad Dean didn't kill her too. I like that he can be a little shady on the small things, like credit card scams, but when it gets to the big issues, life and death- he ALWAYS tries to do the right thing. Sometimes he can be very black and white about evil, but that has been a good thing too
