The Night When We Won

Jan 12, 2020 23:03

The 1991 January Events in Vilnius were not limited to the Soviets seizing the TV Tower on January 13 and killing 13 Lithuanian civilians there. The Press House was seized on January 11. The Radio and Television Committee, as it was called back then, got all the half of facade burrowed by Soviet bullets in the early hours of January 13. One of the unarmed defenders was killed here. Of the attacking forces, a soldier was killed by ricochet in the corridors. The radio and television presenters continued live broadcast until it was disconnected by the invaders. Outside, my brother has suffered hearing damage and my father could do nothing except stand there while his workplace (in fact, his Guild and his Haven) was being raided and his colleagues (or rather his Fellowship) threatened at gun point.
So I felt obliged to make my own photos today.

This same night, tens of thousands of people waited around the Parliament, ready to face their fate and the fate of their country. The advance of the Soviet armed forces was halted, even if we might never learn how the decision was made. Likely, Gorbi finally got the knack of estimating ‘acceptable’ body-count under the world-wide glasnot’. No one knew then, however this was the day of the victory.

Remembering Szymon Konarski and the bullets of the Empire...

It is so calm now, yet this is a short video of the events here 29 years ago:
